Help save a parked shark!
At my highschool, one of the teachers has parked their 928 in the autoshop. The car has been sitting for at least 4 years, waiting for the waterpump to be changed. I once talked with the owner about purchasing it from them, since it was only gathering dust, and he mentioned that there was some transmission trouble as well, but failed to specify. The car is in near-perfect visual condition, however. The black paint is still very good, maybe needing touchup in a few places, and the orange/dark tan interior is in great condition (leather all intact).
However, while sitting in storage, some kid thought it would be a great idea to take a rock to the back window. Now the 928 sits parked in the shop garage with a gaping hole in the back.
I was wondering if any of you shark owners had an intact hatch laying around somewhere, or knew where to find one for a decent cost. I'm not very familiar with changes over the years for 928s, and the shop teacher wasn't sure of the year of the car either. Are hatches universal fits like the 944/968 series?
Let me know, and thanks.

1. No spoiler '78-'82 non 'S' 4.5 ltr.
2. rubber lip spoiler 928S '80-'86 4.7 ltr.
3.'wing' spoiler '87-'95 5.0/5.4 ltr.

Unsolicited advice...Be careful...A 928 sitting for that long isn't good especially if there is also a known existing problem with the transmission. 928s are very costly to restore unless you do the majority of the work yourself. The only plus is that it was sitting inside and you say the interior is in great shape. I restored mine after it sat for 8 years - didn't know what I was getting in to - but I would never do it again. Had I known what I know now, I would have bought a running car in good shape with good maintenance records.
But to answer your question, like Rich said, 928 International has it.

Interesting concept...BUT it could become seriously expensive very quickly......if you turn your own wrenches you might be able to have a decent runner for fairly cheap......but you know it needs a TB-waterpump & has an admitted bad tranny...+ who knows what else......it would have to be very cheap to make it worthwhile......

If the spoiler is original on a US car, that would make it 82-86 IIRC. The early 3-speed autos (78-82?) are dirt cheap. The later 4-speed autos are close to bulletproof. Fixing the tranny 'problem' is probably as simple as fluid and filter changes or maybe a valve change. That is of course a guess based on how rarely they break. Rear window or hatch is a simple fix. As long as it's pre-85-86, the TB/WP (~$500 in parts for everything) is not a life or death issue.
Find more info (VIN would be nice) and report back.

It is also possible it is an '81 with the competition package.
Does anybody know of any simple way to tell if my car has the competition package? I'm assuming mine does since I have the spoilers, the flat discs, and it had sport seats in it...but those things could've been added on. I don't know of any option codes. It's not a big deal...but it'd be cool to know.

Casey,
A phone call to Porsche America can get you the option codes for your car. Just call them with the VIN and they'll tell you what option codes were shipped with the car. Sometimes they get it wrong, but I think they're usually right, they were for mine.

Get the VIN & if possible the engine No.(below thermostat housing )(engine swaps were done, 4.5 in place of 4.7) & post it
