BTW, thanks for bringing this up Andrew. I think it is important to know which connection to make. Based on the little foot note, US cars should connect to pin #12

However, I think many have disconnected the RDK's (like on my car) and they were discontinued for the 94/95 cars. RDK's are pins 10,12,16 and 53. However, pin 53 is the same as 16!!! Somebody F'd up! I would be more inclined to connect to any of these pins 43, 45, 47 or 50 for the Navigation unit. Anyone see an issue with this?

I vote for 47 or 50.
With 'em SC boys, wonder how confused the GPS unit will be when the comparitive satellite signals say 100 ft of motion and the rear wheel sensors report 180 ft of speed ticks.
Wonder which way the GPS unit will bias the perceived location with a strong satellite signal but with a digressive speed sensor reading.

I'd be inclined to go with one of the front wheel speed senders. For some reason I think I might confuse the system if I were to put it on the rear!

I have talked about some of the fixed units w/a fellow co-worker. As he explained it to me the reason that they have speed sensors is so that areas w/poor reception it can still be somewhat functional. For instance, areas w/large tall building or tunnels. No sat reception in tunnels or in adverse weather conditions. Their internal compass should be able to maintain their direction while leaving it to the vehicle sensor to determine the speed. I guess that really, no sat fix is needed.

Nice unit from the looks of it Andrew.

Correct Michael. I am installing the Eclipes AVN7000 in a 84 today. Very nice unit with the nav on a built in hard drive. Man this thing is fast loading maps. Back to the speed sensor. They are there just to add to the accuracy of the unit and only so mush as moving your indicator down the map when there are to few Sat. to track.with out this you may get a jumpy indicator from time to time. On this old bugger i am working on I may very well not hook it up.

Thurston,
A bit off topic, but still of much interest, How are you installing the head unit? Is this a 2-din system? Pics please.

Its a single din unit. I will take pics when i am done. Only hang up to a single din is it blocks the heater controls when in the up pos. Better in my book then cutting up a dang near perfect car.

the 20 GB HD has loads of room for MP3's as well as holding the map data.

Pictures to come.

I have heard that some of these units tie into the speed sensor/parking brake/etc so they can limit the amount of fiddling you can do while moving. Makes a modicum of sense, but if you have a navigator at times, you may want to defeat these circuits.

The original unit Andrew was looking at has a full-time screen, it doesn't open And Dave, I agree, I think those are all just defeat circuits. In my DVD setups I generally defeat them. I don't watch movies anyway .... Who needs one when the moment you get into your Porsche you start having driving fun?

OK I read Andrew and Thursty's posts, I understand ... the speed ref is for more than just defeat.

Sure, same for the gear position hookup... but the parking brake hookup disables certain functions unless the brake is set, at least on the AVIC-D2 that Keith posted the manual page from.

Dave is correct with the parking brake hook up. ...the one thing I won't connect. The speed sensor is necessary as stated for accuracy. The reverse hook up is for the rear view camera function. This overrides the Nav, but can also be configured to act as a rear view mirror....or record interesting video from the business end of a Porsche

Andrew - you can connect on the CE panel, mine is done this way - use the speedo signal that goes to the instrument cluster. On your car this should be on plug/pin F15.

That is what I did for my Avic-D1, following Alan's advice. It's been working great for close to 2 years

It must be late, or I'm going mental... probably both. Plug 15 on the CE panel? Where is the CE panel? Are you talking about the main fuse pane? Sorry.
