In one foto, there is the splash panel on the driver's side with a securing bracket, apparently for securing something ...but nothings' in them..and I can't find them on the PET. They must serve some purpose. Any idea?

In the second foto, coming front, there are two small yellow wires in a gray sheath, going into a connector, the extending a few inches before being capped. Any idea what this is for? There is nothing similar on the other side.

It's the outside temp sensor for the HVAC system.

The wires go to missing outside air temp sensor. The bracket I believe is to hold the missing alternator cooling air duct, which houses the temp sensor.

You seem to be missing the air intake hose for the alternator. On the end there is a loop of hose held by that bracket. The wire you have there is the outside temperature thermistor for the climate control. It usually is inserted into a metal section that is part of of the alternator air intake hose, just before the final end loop.

The way to install the hose in the bracket is to detach the hose end from the alternator and pull some slack into the fender area. Once the hose is set in the bracket and the liner piece is reinstalled in the wheel well, pull the slack back out and reattach the other end to the alternator. I did it the hard way the first few times.

This is a good question, is the temp sensor even required? On my '94 968, I have a temperature gauge that reads outside temperature and displays it. No such display in my '88 928. But if not having a temp sensor will effect the cars function or HVAC, I'd better get one, eh?

The HVAC will function, but if I’m not mistaken the controller will think it's really cold outside. When mine was disconnected and I had to slide the temp selector to the far left before it would work. Now that it's reconnected, the A/C works in other positions.

Following are some pictures of the alternator cooling duct I think you are missing. Mine had a hole in it and I guess some critter decided to make a nest in there.

I think the sensor is still there on the end - maybe not. If the climate controller will still adjust and hold various temperature settings, then it is working. Without the sensor, you just get hot and cold.

The sensor for displaying outside termperature in the digital dash is separate from this sensor. The digital dash outside temperature sensor is located in the driver sideview mirror.

The HVAC system has a comparator algorithim circuit. It compares the o/s temp to the inside temp with consideration for the temp lever and opens/closes flaps accordingly particularly the recirc flap and the heater valve. With no o/s sensor present (which IIRC is a temp variable resistor) the circuit see's infinite resistance and shall swing to one extreme (I believe its full heat).............have to check the WSM............brb.

Well, it looks like I'm in the market for an Outside Temperature Sensor. Used works for me. Anyon have an extra laying around?
