most of it already is (on a public road), unfortunately. guess that's why I got into off road racing years ago. kinda like the last frontier of hot rodding, since even our lakes and rivers now have speed limits...

Sorry all. I've been terribly busy. I'm working on getting some pictures that will show the cracks. Mike's drawing with the red line is exactly where they crack. This crack moves all the way up into the cylinders. It will go so far up that combustion will actually pressurize the oil system. The cracks spread to the next cylinder and that cylinder cracks downward. So much for worrying about the thin 104mm bores! the cracks don't travel up the cylinders to the tops! They actually stop where the lower part of the block meets the water jackets. Some water does get into the cracks and probably into the oiling system.

Give me a couple of days to get pictures that are worth the time.

It will be good to see the actual pics when Greg posts them, but based upon your analysis and Gregs confirmation of where the cracks occur, doesn't appear that the alusil material of the block has met its stress limit? What I'm wondering is how would stronger studs, additional pinning, etc, help in this situation where it appears that perhaps the alusil had met its stress limit.

I first saw the darton sleeves on Mr. Boyer's car back in 2004. No updates from me - anyone in the PacNW?

Just found another thread over on the 951 board. It seems to be working for quite a few people - this is obviously not currently running, but the block is the same material.

I saw that spectacular work of art in their shop in a PCA tech session. They have created a picasso, and it will eat whatecer comes in its path. Amazing attention to detail, incredible fab work. Engineered, not cobbled.

This thread just goes to show what a friggin' poser I am when it comes to these cars. This is all overwhelming for me as I have no automotive background (ssshhhh don't tell all the folks whose cars I have worked on!).

I understand 75% of what is being said and can imagine forces descibed, but when it comes down to it, I am so out of my element in this part of 928 ownership is not even funny. Truly a humbling thread, though it seems out of place these days on the Rennlist.

I am thankful that interest is brought to light over these engines, to delve deeper than over just how it works.
