Foam is put over the now dead tar paper that was to reduce vibration. Foam attenuates the "ricocheting" noise inside the car. It was covered in rubber. Kind of the reverse of what I will be doing - putting the raamat down and then the ensolite.

Some updated pics of the sunroof frame removal so that I can sit in the car with a helmet.... and be in the front seat.
Here we have the partial job, as I was changing the curring wheel.
And here are some of the finished job:
And a more macro view:
The non-sunroof headliner now fits, except I have to figure out how to anchor it at the back near the hatch. NO biggie, but this should allow helmet use, AND remove a good 30 pounds from right at the top of the car. It would be nice if I could form a headliner that is even lighter then the one I have, as weight savings will be important with this car.

Brendan,
Dude you're brave, I know if I ever got mine this far apart it might never come back.
Is there some kind of structural support you plan to put in there? I thought there was some in place around the sunroof.
Good luck, and keep up the good work.
BTW- I'm John Galt. I used to be Howard Roark.

The support for the NON-sunroof cars is basically the same as the sunroof cars, except for a tie-in to the side box section right above the doors. So while I was not planning any roll cage per say, when I found out more about seam welding, and how to do it, there may be some ties installed at the back. I don't know yet, but its no less structurally sound then the non-sunroof.
Infact, I need to point out that much of the structure of the sunroof box is glued in at the front to the outside shell!
