Speaker depth behind the perforated door panel?

Got it. Sorry, I had forgotten that it was you who mentioned the Lanzars. I looked up Pyles as well, and this one looks interesting. I've not worked with a "Concealment magnet" before, but it seems like a good idea for reducing depth. Do you recall whether there is room there for the magnet somewhere? I'm not sure if there are restrictions for where you can mount a magnet.
OTOH, I've not heard great things about Pyle equipment.

The Pyle and Lanzar speakers look so similar, that I would guess they are manufactured by the same company

Like I said, they are cheap speakers, but should be an improvement over the stock Blaupunkt speakers. The stock speakers have very thin paper cones that are about as flexible as the rubber/cloth surrounds, and they have no tweeter. In case it is not clear in the photo of the stock speakers, the magnet is mounted in front of the cone, just like the MB Quart RUA speakers.
I'm not sure I understand the magnet questions. The "concealment magnets" on the Lanzar and Pyle speakers are mounted to the frames, just like normal speakers; the difference is that the magnets are super-thin, hence the "slim" profile.

Aha, I get it now. The view of the magnet in the image on the right makes it appear round ... thus different than the speaker itself. I was thinking that maybe this was a two piece system with the magnet mounted elsewhere.

Speaker hunt so far stinks, best fit looks like an obsolete Alpine 4x6 with a magnet slightly larger in diameter than door spot. I am not finding anything else locally, so I can't measure and be sure of the claimed depth on the others. Pioneer TS-P462 is a drop in depth, not flush, and panel looks thick in images. MB Quart has the RUA 210 that claims shallow mount, via locating the magnet forward of the cone, again, no verification. Blaupunkt has a Thin line, Thx 352 and Thx 402 look very promising, enough so that I may order a pair blind and see how it turns out if I can't find a local source.
Here are some picts of my open doors, and the passenger side rear seat speaker.

I have 2 pairs of Clarion 4x6 Plate speakers i bought in 2003. The mounting depth is 1 13/16". I bought them on Jay Kempfs reco. I havent installed them yet. After putting in a 6" powered Bazooka Tube it seemed unnecessary.

83 and earlier (not sure how far, but I think all) don't have external speaker grilles, the leather and fiberboard panel have perforations like peg board in the corner where the speaker goes. According to my car stereo guy part of the job is that all the holes that aren't directly in front of the speaker need to be sealed. I considered just buying a nice set of 84+ door panels with grilles, but decided to keep them original.
Lanzar VX460S shallow speaker looks promising and its a very common brand, so I will add it to my hunt for later today. Mounting depth is shown as 1.15", even if that is drop in, as long as the tweeter doesn't stick out much it could work. Blaupunkt Thx402 might be a better sounding speaker, but my real money is going in the exhaust anyway. I did order a Bazooka BTA8100 last night, but continue looking for a head unit (I like the JVC AR870, but its a year or so old and getting hard to find cheap).
Same time this stuff goes in later this week, the old Clifford alarm is coming out and I think this keyless entry will be going in, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009SWLG4

I put in new door speakers in the 81 today. Pioneer TS-A4672r, 4 x 6's and they fit no problem. Had to get a little creative with the mounting points. I could only get it polted to 2 posts, but as tight as it is held by the panel and door, no problem. Sounds 100 times better. Next, the back speakers!!

I got tired of waiting to find the thin ones and took the local shops recommendation of using a NOS Alpine 3.5" they had on the shelf due to time constraints with other work, then about the time I was supposed to pick the car up (like a week later) they tell me they aren't fitting. Argh.
Lots happen, too much to type.
Bottom line the Alpines are in my doors, sound ok with the Bazooka handling the bass, and my door panels are more or less close to normal looking and fitting, but no stereo shop is going to get to mess with any 928 of mine again.

Hello Guys;
How is the main upper door panel mounted to the door. After removing the pull handle, storage box unit and the lock **** and trim piece I decided to stop as I couldnot tell how the panel was held on. Is it just press fitted with plastic retainers that are just popped out. Wanted to remove my panels to look at the door speakers but didnot want to destroy the panel in the process. How many mounting points?
Thanks.

I picked up the Pioneer TS-4672R for the doors today at Bestbuy. They also had Pioneer TS-G1043R for the rears. They will fit with a small spacer to space the tweeter away from the panel. I suppose I could have looked harder for other 4" rounds for the rears but they were in front of me and the price was decent.
