There are plastic retainers, but they pop out nicely if you use the correct tool. Be gentle!

In addition to the plastic retainers, you also have several 10mm bolts, including 2 in the cargo box, one in the hole for the air vent.

There are also a couple of screws buried in the bottom of the **** carpet, and a couple of screws in the plastic cover around the wiring harness. There's a notch in the panel to slide it past the hard plastic wiring sheath.

Once you have everything loose, including the plastic retainers, lift up on the end closest to the car, and slide it a bit away from the door lock.

Once I did the driver's door, ther other one was easy!

Just a quick update.
I got all 4 speakers installed.
The Pioneer TS-G1043R was a easy fit into the rear location. I wanted to space them away from the panel a little bit so all I did was break the plastic mounting tabs off the old speakers and put them on the mounting screws on the panel. Then the Pioneers fit perfect. The mounting holes are in the exact right location and fit very nice.
The new speakers don't put out much if any bass but that will be fixed with an added subwoffer.
All in all a good upgrade at a low price.

I'm looking to replace my door speakers on my 79. Seems these Pioneers are the only known option. How do they sound and fit? How do they look from the outside? Can you post or email a picture of the door panel. I'm curious if there is a bump where the tweater is and if you can see the speaker through the door perfs.

A couple cheapo speakers, Lanzar and Pyle, make a speaker I think for the Chevy S10 dash that should fit, but the depth requirement and flush mounting behind the panel do make options limited.

Looking at the door panel once its removed (this from memory) there is a larger area of perforations with a smaller cutout in the middle. The cutout area has some mesh fabric between it and material of the door panel covering, but hard to say how visible anything might be once installed.

Finally got around to adding information from the door speaker install in my 1983S:

I used Sony Xplod 4"X6" 4 way 140w I got from Walmart. Cost about $80 as I remember:


The original Blaupunkt speakers look like this. They were held to the door panel by a bolt, washer and nut. The plastic mounting body and speaker are all one unit:

These sheets show the speaker dimensions. Tho depth is 1 3/4":



I used the new speaker as a guide to mark the panel and then cut them out being sure to keep a tight fit around the perimeter of the speaker so that new mounting flange can be secured to the cut panel:



The panels must be cut to allow for the additional depth to the Sony speakers which are 1 7/8". Be sure to set the speakers in the door panel so that the magnet and back line up as closely as possible with the cut out in the door frame. I didnot alter the door frame at all! It was a tight fit so I put some adhesive form tape on the speaker magnet to prevent contact of the magnet with the metal of the door frame.

Next I re-attached the foam support backing using some spray adhesive. Do not glue this to the speaker frame, just the fiber door panel:


Re-attached the original perforated leather door covering and reinstall the door panel:


There is a very slight bulge in the speaker panel but it is barely noticable. You can see the speaker thru the panel because the original speaker cloth cover fell to pieces upon removal. I may get some new speaker cloth in the future but the speaker is barely noticable unless you look close and i have kinda got use to seeing the red color thur them so it no problem so far:


Over all I am happy with the install , the look and the speaker sound fine to me, but I an not an audiophile, just need them to be functional.

I will take some pictures but you won't see anything but the panels looking stock. The fronts fit very snug. I didn't cut or modify my panel in any way but they are definately in there tight. I'm happy with the sound for the price. As I said they do nothing for bass but the highs are clean and they go loud enough for me.
I did cut out the old speaker out of the factory plastic mounting plate and used it to mount the new speaker. The speakers were blown any way and this way I could mount the speakers using the factory screws already in the panel.

I have been meaning to take some pictures of my audio install but haven't yet. I added to the speakers a 12" JL Sub with a custom box and tray for the back hatch. Turned out good just need to get a hatch cover from Paul when he has time.

Had to cut behind the upper mids on my 94 a little to make them fit, and had to build out the lower door panels to fit the 6.5's in. These Focal front 3 ways are powered by a dedicated Kicker amp. The rear 10" Boston Acoustics sits in a custom made 3/4" mdf box I built to specs. This sub sits in a rear seat delete cabinet I built along with a buddy. Search: "Form & Function" for more info. Sub is driven by a dedicated, mono Kicker amp. Both amps have end caps to hide all wires & RCA's. You can also choose a multitude of skins from various artists to cover the amps and they just look great. This also gives the system a real professional, finished look. Sounds incredible. T

If you want to wait another couple weeks, I will have replacement speakers for the OB. They wont be as affordable as the Pioneers, but you wont be able to find any better speakers out there.

I have someone testing, and thus far, all signs point to yes at this point. I dont have an OB to test with here, so dependent on volunteer efforts. I should have a definitive answer shortly.

Hans, I would totally be into waiting, but herein lies my problem: I am fitting early door panels to an 85 and it will only be a temporary solution for me until I can get model appropriate late door panels. Then, I would put your late speakers in .
