Default GAS SMELL BUT NO LEAK!

Hi there, I am new to this forum. I rescently purchased an "84 Euro S. I am getting a fuel smell from the rt. rear of the car, but there is no leak visible. I checked the valve and hoses in the front of the back wheel and did a pressure check on the tank up in the fender. All seems fine. I noticed when I put the wheel back on & torqued the nuts, the car rocked back & forth, and the gas slashed around, the smell became more pronounced. Any ideas on what I may be looking at?

I also have checked the unit at the top of the tank, under the carpet. I have NOT filled the tank all the way up! Something may be lurking there!

Much thanks!

Rob

There's an expansion tank inside the rear right wheel well at the top. Mine has a crack in the mount that causes a fuel smell when the tank is topped off. Sounds like this could be you too.

It's black and very oddly shaped to fit inside the wheel well.

If you normally park outdoors, go ahead and fill the tank so you can find the problem. If you normally park in the garage, fill it up right before you plan to take a long ~100 mile drive. That way you can find the leak, then use enough fuel so that you won't fill your garage with explosive fumes when you park it. It's probably time to replace all of the vent lines.

Also note that the o-ring around the sending unit on top of the gas tank inside the car can dry rot and allow fumes to leak into the cabin. That was the issue with mine when I got the petrol smell.

Sounds like a good idea! Thanks! I was hoping to get away with NOT having to drop the tank, but I don't think I will be that lucky! Is this a common problem with the 928"s ? & Is dropping the tank very involved?

Thanks!

Rob

My cabin is fine with the windows closed and fresh air comming in! I get the smell when I am outside the vehicle & when driving with the windows down, & the vacume moving cars cause, brings the air into the car from the rear.

You are *positive* it's coming from the rear? The more common cause of gas smell is a broken y connector in the right front wheel well. It's a plastic piece that breaks on every 928, and there is a very nice stainless replacement part available.

Here's a description of the issue:

and you can get the part here:

This is much easier to deal with than the tank, so it might be worth checking first. Generally, you small this at idle and you don't smell it if the car is moving, but since it's probably broken on your car, it's worth checking out as well.

Isn't the fuel recovery system with the Y connector used only on the S4 and newer?

Thanks! I will check this part. I am very sure, though, the smell is coming from the rt. rear. Behind the wheel, by the filler neck is where it is stongest!

Hey Fabric, could you post those 2 links again please. I did a quote and had to erase them. Sorry.

Thanks!

Both of my 928's have suffered from gas leaks from the pump/filter connections. The assembly is at the rt rear of the car under a steel cover that is secured by two 10mm nuts. Takes about two minutes to gain access. In my case the copper sealing washers were the cause of the leaks.

Big Rob

you could also check the hose that goes from the filler neck poitning to the rear down, through the frame rail to an invisible connection on top of the tank behind and outboard of the sender unit.

Top of the tank (removed from 928) rear of tank towards top of pic. Hose goes between the two connectins pointing up the pic.

Where the tank was - showing the hose - held in place by hand through filler cap.
