Radiator end caps - Gotcha!
I bought two end caps from our friends at 928 Int part number 928 106 041 01 for a radiator I had rebuilt. There was no mention of the caps being specific to MY only if it had a cooler or not.
Just fitted the rad and the fan cowl will not lay flush against the rad because there are two brackets, one on each tank that are in the way.
The car is an 87 and the brackets look like they might have something to do with the cowl on earlier cars.
I would normally call Jim but its Sunday and I want to get the job finished.
Is it OK to remove the brackets and did I just order the wrong end caps?
Anyone been there and done that?
Thanks,
Roger

now that you mentioned this I do believe my mechanic needed to make a small adjustment via dremel on the end tanks I purchased from 928 intl.

Roger you will have to cut off the brackets, you can use a hack saw or a dremel ,it wont affect fit or function. this is so the tank will fit more than a few applications just curious did you see what the new tank seal looked like was it flat or round?? thanks Stan

My 83 has a bracket on the LHS tank that is used to cable tie the hose in place the stop it moving around? Also has bits the fan shroud engages.....
When I built my electric fan brackets I used a dead rad core from a friend as a template for fit and mounting points . When it cam to fitting time, something wasnt quite right....on careful examination I found that my car's 83 rad had the core fins come right out to the edge of the top and bottom plates, but the later unit had ~1cm (3/8") of free space on the to/bottom plates before the core. Basically the core is 3/4" thinner on later cars.

These brackets are end tanks for 85/86 MY. So I would not remove the brackets, my thought is that there is pressure from within and heat, and it will find the weakest point, ergo your cut. What I did was to cut the cowl.

Roger I guess i was thinking about the clips that are molded onto the sides of the tank they are for engaging the fan shroud, later models use a different system to attach the fan shroud, so cutting these clips off will let the fan shroud sit flush on its mounts, if we are all talking about the same thing?

H,
I did think about cuting the cowl but was concerned about the bracket hitting the fan.
Stan,
I am pretty sure we are talking about the same thing.
Pics soon.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for confirming that.
Would it be useful to include an instruction note with the end cap telling the customer that.
The end caps from 928 Int were a perfect solution to my problem and the shipping like a speedy bullet.

The only supplier of the end tanks we have found has only the one with the tabs which are easy to cut off. The typical radiator repair shop should know about removing the tabs. Behr who makes the radiators does NOT consider them to be rebuildable. They want you to simply buy a new radiator....from them ! We of course have the all aluminum performance radiators for $895 no more plastic , rubber seals, or flimsy alluminum tabs .
