A Porsche 928 competes at Pike's Peak in 2007
I have received notification today that my application to run our supercharged Porsche 928 in the 2007 Pike's Peak International Hill Climb has been accepted.
We started our build of the vehicle for this event about two months ago, and have been hoping to be chosen to run. They have fairly limited numbers of vehicles in each field.
Its quite a compliment just to be chosen to run - the PPIHC is an invitation-only event. The list of previous competitors and past winners reads like a who's who of Motorsport and I am honored just to drive the same course.
We have been placed in the Pike's Peak Open class - vehicles in this class must be based on a production vehicle, closed bodied, 4-wheeled vehicles. Vehicles in the Open class must be recognizable with all the stock body panels including bumpers in place. Only fender flares and wings are allowed, and only with certain approvals. The engine is open, but must derive from the original vehicle. There are many (many many) other rules - but that'll give you a broad brush-stroke.
Schedule here: (subject to change)

A few details: 12.4 miles, 156 turns, average grade is 7% with a max of 10.5%, you start at 9,000 ft above sea level and end up at 14,100 ft. .....and no guard rails.
I'm looking for a volunteer or two to help crew for this car during race week.
At the moment, I think there may only be two of us coming - and that's not enough for tire changes, fueling, and maintenance. If you are near Colorado Springs and interested - please let me know.
Otherwise - be sure to watch Speed channel that week! We have been told by Pike's Peak historians and the Race Officials that they have never seen or heard of a 928 competing at Pike's Peak, so this will be a "first" for the breed.

Carl -
Congrats!
I'm known to take my fair share of risks but driving as fast as you can on a mountain road of , I presume, different surfaces with drops (like I've seen on TV) and no gaurd rails, with witnesses is so far out of my league.... I just can't imagine!
Do they give you any practice time on the course?

The race is currently scheduled for July 21st, 2007 with practices the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday before.
No one is allowed to prcatice the entire race course - ever. You practice the bottom 4 miles on Wed, the middle 4 miles on Thursday, and the top 4 miles on Friday. On Saturday (race day) is the first time you will ever run the entire course contiguously.

Carl, all the best, and yes a great honour ... GOOD JOB. You will need to rebuild your suspension and re-think braking, rubber, damping, ride attitude and traction control.

Congratulations Carl,
You know they call Pikes Peak , Unser's Mountain.
Alot of competition locally and out of state.
Be careful around the Devil's Playground. It didn't get that name for it's looks!
Good Luck!

Actually Carl it's about time that somepne somewhere pay some attention to the 928 OTHER THAN a racetrack or street car. The work you will be doing is going to give birth to possibly VERY EXCITING developments in 928 suspension and performance. You have no choice but to invent a great many things. The 928 has been used in rallye applications, but only very selectively. I can't wait.
