Found this Pike's Peak parade on UTube. Carl goes by about 2:10 into it. Sorry I'm too new to post the link but this might help.

Awesome job Carl and the 928 Motorsports team, and also Guido.

"Mrs Carl" is a fine lady and it isn't surprising that the locals knew her. Carl took time out to show my wife and I the race car and his shop. Good guys do well when they work hard and live the dream.
Congrats on the Peak, Carl!

We had 2 sets of the BFG KDW/2 tires with us, and figured we would destroy one in practice and use the other for the race. But they proved durable and so we decided to run the scuffed ones on race day w/o changes. Scuffed tires grab better than brand new ones.
No - I never figured to Podium. 2 reasons why Rookies do not win at Pike's Peak.
1) Rookies have to qualify - we have to successfully race each section of the mountain to qualify for the PPIHC Race Committee, before they will approve you for racing on Saturday. They want to ensure that you are competent and competitive. If you cannot race each 3rd of the mountain correctly on Tues/Wed and Thurs, you cannot race the whole thing on Saturday.
The toll on the car is high. We saw head gaskets blown, overheated engines, lunched gearboxes, - all the stuff. So by the time we had qualified for the race, we had run 9 times up the mountain! So Pikes Peak for a Rookie is not A hill climb, it is 9 hill climbs in a 4-day period.
2) Rookies just do not know the turns and the mountain well. So may corners look like one another and only show themselves when its too late to ciorrect your mistake. So, when you are unsure whether this corner breaks L or R around the bend, you slow down. Experienced PPIHCV driver can go a lot faster if they know where they are and have it memorized.
Am I returning? We are talking about it. I have a lot on my plate right now, and some time to decide. But we're thinking about it.

The video is up
Soon, I will put up the first 4 miles of the Pikes peak video.
I am still collecting phtos and they willbe a page of the best pictures too.
But for the moment - I have the whole Pikes Peak run available for download.
(up until the point where the video camera stopped about 3 turns from the top)
Even trimmed, it is 75 Mb (it has stereo audio too).
I need you guys to play nice.... if the FTP server says it is busy - IT IS - try again later or off-hours.
Here is where you can find it....

Oh my bandwidth!
Cool video! That's some smooth driving. I've never run on dirt at any kind of speed, but the controls look like you're driving deep snow- Really fast! The road part is killer! It's going to be very cool when more of it's paved.
That second spin is wild, all you can see when you came to rest is air from over the side of the road. I would definitely have had a problem continuing from there if it were me.
Great job and great video Carl. I hope you do it again next year, but even if you don't, it was an amazing feat.

WOW!! Thats an AWESOME video Carl!!!
Thanks so much for sharing your Mr.Toad's Wild Ride up the mountain! That 2nd spin when you were on pavement made me squirm in my seat as you got close to the edge!! Definitely more hair raising once you cleared the tree line when there were no guardrails! Not only a testament to your's & Guido's abilities as driver & navigator, but also to you & your crew's abilities to prepare your car & even more to the solid dependability of a 20+ yr old 928 when prepared correctly!
You most certainly made more of an impression upon many that you aren't even aware of yet Carl! We all tip our hats in appreciation for allowing us to live the dream through your efforts!! Told the wife earlier this week about your achievement & how much I wish we could bring both our sharks up for your Autobahn event in Sept! Just a wee bit too far for us or we'd be there!

You can see me in the video clap my hands after the 2nd spin. I was telling myself to slow down, push the adrenaline down a little bit, and get smoother.
The adrenaline was so high it was hard to remain in control and reserved. I figured 2 spins was all you get... I was telling myself you probably do not get 3 spins on Pikes Peak so "knock it off!" I drove the remainder of the race more calmly.
It requires different techniques to drive this race at this time - you can see on pavement its all weight transfer, throw the car around, hard braking, apex corners, typical road race stuff. The moment I get on dirt its widen the turns, avoid a lot of weight transfer, basically exactly like you said... driving on snow.
Then its back to pavement for 2 miles, then pea gravel for the top 5 miles.
After I got over the Monday and Tuesday awe and fear of it, by Saturday I loved it and could not wait to make my run. Its the pinnacle of my career at this time.
PS: just to clear something up - I was officially listed as a 1978 928 because that is the body and frame age of my car. I like to call it a 1978/88. The frame is 1978, the transaxle and torque tube is 1988 with LSD, the block is 1985, the heads are 1983, the cams and crank are 1978, the intake manifold and throttle body are 1981 Euro. There's more, but you get the picture. Its hard to call lit a '78. Its hard to call it anything.
Racing in the Open Division required that I get a waiver from the rules committee that they would not apply the "vehicles must be 10 years of age or newer" rule to me. I got that in writing in about November 2006, and then we began our 8-month Pikes Peak build in earnest.
