Not at all certain. There was a long Excellence report on Pike's Peak a few years back, following a well-respected Carrera 4S racer in his saga over a few years. He had a Carrera 2 and went to a 4S and discovered that disabling the front diff was the way to go .... 2-wheel gave more control and better times.

Carl, that's a cool pic. Gettin' sideways !
I like the video from outside the car, especially where your drown out the helicopters coming out of the corners. Great stuff!
I didn't have any trouble downloading them (this time) thanks for the tip, I was previously trying to view them from your server, rather than 'save link as...' then running it locally. It works fine for me that way.

Finally got to watch the full video....wow did your pace drop when you hit the dirt.....I would guess about 1/2...... Also I noticed the "oops" at about 12:00..... it looks like you got pretty close to the edge!! That had to have some pucker factor!!!

Yes, when you hit dirt with asphalt tires, its like going from dry pavement to snow. Slippery slippery.
That dirt section was worse than the gravel section at the top. I had more traction on the gravel. The dirt was really bad. I had learned thru the qualifying races to tip-toe over the dirt.
I kept testing it... I'd give it a little more throttle, the *** would swing out, I'd lift and put it back, go 100 feet, test it again, etc. All the way up the hill.

Some of you were asking about the 1st place winner - listed as a "2005 Ford Ranger"
Here it is:
This was Leonard Vascholtz's 31st Pike Peak event. He has won the Open Division several times. The next-most frequent Pike's Peak competitor was Schmidt, who too 2nd place, who has raced PPeak 21 times.
His "Ford Ranger" is a purpose-built hill climb machine, tube-framed and all, with a lightweight Ford ranger body in Lexan Dzus fastened to the tubes.
S'pose you had to call it somthing - and Ford Ranger was the most recognizable.
Leonard was a nice fella - we sat at his table at the awards ceremony. He retired this year. Everybody gave him a standing ovation for racing Pike's Peak 31 times - more than anybody else by far.

Do they remove the windshield to take off the air cleaner ? When they say OPEN category they mean really really open Like a "Funny Car" for hillclimbs !

Precisely. I was in the Open Division - and its almost completely open to anything. A VERY tough class to compete in. Very few rules. The only class that is faster is the Unlimited Division, and that has only 1 competitor this year. My supercharger is what put me in the Open Division. I did not fit anywhere else.
