Exclamation New 928 owner - Love at first bite!

Hiya,

I just bought a beautiful black '79 928 about a month ago for $2200 and have since put at least that much more into it. I've got it smogged and all the safety issues fixed, but it still has a lot of weekends on the ramps before it'll be through.

I just want to introduce myself, cuz there's no question that I'll need all the help I can get with this beast, and this looks like the best place to contribute what I'm learning as well.

Also, I see a few other shark owners in the area, so I figured I'd warn you before I see you on the road and follow you into some random parking lot to check out your ride.

Here's my top ten list of repairs in the queue (and pretty much in order of importance):

1. Fuel leak when I fill the tank all the way full.
2. Upper ball joints
3. Control arm bushings
4. Front wheel bearings
5. Motor mounts
6. Power Steering pump leaks
7. Small Cam, crank seal and head leaks
8. Electric windows not working
9. Heater/AC Control broken
10. Rear Bumper cover and left bumper shock

Then, of course, I want to repaint it and do the interior.

So, that should explain my handle "3000teeth" --I'm sure I'll be bitten by every one of 'em.

Look forward to seeing you all on the posts.

Best Regards,

Travis Young
San Jose, CA

PS: My wife calls my car my "new black girlfriend" cuz I spend so much time with her, and even went as far as to name her: "Carlotta!"

Welcome. If you are good at the wrenches, most of the items listed are very manageable. GL

Travis:

There are quite a few of us in the area, if you need any help. Hope to meet you as soon.

Congrats on the new ride, and one bite from a shark usually does the trick.

I don't know what these guys are talking about wrenches, I have a little bit of plastic in my wallet that fixes everything.

I am sure I am not telling you anything, but safety first, gas leaks etc.

Read the first post for newbies, there is a link in it to Jim Morehouse who scanned all the workshop manuals and indexed to make them easy to search on a CD, you should order one of those right away, and since you are wrenching instead of carding, maybe get the second set of CDs with all the technical manuals.

Have some fun, we are social group.

And get a rennlist membership, two years is the good deal.

Welcome, Travis. Nice list of "fix it" items, but I prefer to think of your screen name, 3000 Teeth, as derived from the number of teeth a Great White shark can have at any one time...

Congrats! I just bought an 82 5-speed a couple weeks ago and my wife doesn't do much other than roll her eyes. I had to replace a trashed throwout bearing and a blown clutch. Now I am waiting for a hydrolic line to come in from Germany. Kills me that I haven't been able to drive this car but then I got it for a song. I'm in the area so drop a line if you need an extra set of hands.

Welcome,

I bought an '81 928 last September, and I began using it as a daily driver about a week ago! I spent a lot of time in the garage, and I have a lot ahead of me. People here are great.

welcome!!

I bought an '80 last march, and I've been working my way down a similar list.... the experience is worth it! But patience is a virtue... I'm begining to think the car is helping me more than I'm helping it!

Fuel tank is probably a simple, cheap seal for the level sending unit or a hose... take care of that soon before a spark takes it out!

Welcome, Travis. If your Rennlist Member status has yet to show up with your user name, I believe you can send an e-mail to the address listed with your membership confirmation querying it's status.

Good luck with Carlotta. May she be good to you. Post pics at your earliest convenience.

I too have a fuel leak when I fill my tank up all the way. There are some possible fixes in this thread:
