Gotcha Malcolm, but since you stated "stock S4" muffler, I wanted to clarify that it really is "stock early S4" muffler.

On to resonators....I'm wondering if GT resonators really are GT resonators? I've got the same "shorties" on my car, but since they're on my S4, I'm calling 'em S4 resonators. When did the short resonators start going into production?

See my post above: I have "S4 resonators" and it's loud.

Ed, I'm not sure when the "shorties" came in to being. From talking to Sterling, ours are the GT's...........Smaller ones. From looking at Rog's S4's I'm wondering if I got hooked up with the "GT" resonators. When I looked at Pauls today, he also had the smaller ones whereas the other '87' to '90's have had the larger, damn bigger, resonators.

When I 1st brought this up, it seemed as though the Gt's were a replacement for what the '87-90's had. I can't swear to it since it is all heresay and the opinions vary.

Does anyone know when the smaller resonators were put stock on the cars? They can't really be called just a "GT" unless the only one they were put on, production wise, were the GT's.

Ed, you have the smaller resonators. Take a look under Rog's '87 comparted ours. They are the smaller ones.

From the '88 Service Info book:

The previous model years had much larger mid mufflers.

Malcom, the only problem with that pic, it does not show the difference in size in the resonators. The ones that Ed and I are running are 1/2 the size of the typical S4.

I know, I'm just doing my best to help confuse everyone. It looks like from Malcolms post above, that the shorties were/are a change Porsche may have made at some time? So, they really are not GT resonators after all, maybe they should be referred to as "short" and "long".....

I discussed this at length on another thread and Garth posted a pic of the different resonators side by side.............I'll dig it up.

IMHO..during cruise its borderline...somedays i like it..somedays i dont.
Sounds great under WOT though..! I really dont think you will loose much by adding the stock S4 muffler back on...especially when you already have the Xpipe installed. The gains were already made with the X pipe..if you were to swap back and forth between RMB and stock rear muffler at this point, the dyno numbers, from what Louie found, are negligable.
IMHO, it would be simpler to find a lighter rear muffler for these set ups instead of fabbing up a whole "intermediate" system. My .02

Well I am forced to run the RMB because a PO installed it and I wasn't given the stock muffler.

Perhaps we have the ideal set up already with the X (with or without cats), the smaller resonators and a stock rear muffler...........as you say though the rear muffler could be lighter.

Not ideal; the sound is too subdued, IMO
