X pipe plus RMB is very damn loud. Your neighbors will know every time you come home. Expect vandalism. Oh and as a bonus, it drones at common highway speeds. And by drone I mean it's like having your head in a 55 gallon drum with a lawnmower engine.

Yeah, I remember Bill Ball saying he had to put the stock muffler back on after installing the X-pipe.

Do the cars have different resonators I thought I had read some had bigger than other's. You all might be right that the set of X pipe no Cats and the RMB might be way to loud and I might very well be installing my rear muffler back on. I will tell you soon enough and I have not sold anything.

FWIW, I just took my rear muffler out of storage and reinstalled it (replacing the RMB that had been on there for many years); the 928SP X + hi-flo-cats + RMB was just too much noise for me. Fun at first (nothing like letting it rip while under a big underpass with the windows and sunroof open), but I had enough.

Interestingly enough, I haven't even started the car since I made this change a week ago. Damn steep uphill driveway is icy and the shark has to remain in captivity for another few days.

Beware. I still don't an X-pipe, even though I ordered one from a vendor who published an estimated shipping time of 8-10 weeks -- 9 months ago.

If I needed an x-pipe, I would probably order it elsewhere.

Where's 928andRC51? I think he's tried all - or most of - the combos

These are the variables:

Cams: S4 or GT (or GTS)
Muffler: RMB or Club Sport(GT) or S4 muffler. (Not all "GT" mufflers are "GT" mufflers 88 and 89 only.)
Resonators: Small 88+ or Large 87 (or GTS)
mid/down-pipe: Stock Cat or X-pipe w/Cats or X-pipe wo/Cats

The loudest is GT cams with small resonators, x-pipe, no cats, and RMB.
Quietest: Stock '87 set-up.

That was a concern, I have to say. On the vendor's website it shows a picture of them stacked to the rafters.

Are there alternative suppliers of such a thing? Anyone selling a used one?

If I had to I know a local guy who would make a custom whiz bang deal but I'd rather just get one from the UPS guy and bolt it on.

As far as I'm concerned, Andrew nailed it. I drove around with an X-pipe that incorporated Random Technology aftermarket cats for about a week on my 89 with it's RMB. It was loud but (barely) bearable. The problem I had was the QUALITY of the noise. During partial throttle acceleration, which I actually do once in a while, the car sounded like a ricer with a 5" coffee can - you know, that hollow, farty sound. This is somewhat dependent on the type of X-pipe. The ones that are siamesed at low angles (e.g., Louie Ott type) may actually suffer from this more as they more fully mix the pulses from each side, which is the whole point of the X. Others that are more of a 90 degree X don't create this sound phenomenon as much. I put the rear muffler back on. This really quieted the car down too much but got rid of the partial throttle fart. Even Louie himself recommends putting the rear muffler back on, at least for 89-91. Here is a quote:

"The cars with the large center mufflers ('86.5 through '88 and GATS) can use the X pipe along with a RMB and they will sound very nice. Not too loud when cruising on the freeway, but it does command attention at full power and above 3500 rpm. The '85 and '89 and later S4 & GT with the small resonators will be satisfactory for most people if the rear muffler is left installed. Using a RMB on these cars will usually be too loud. The rear muffler doesn't make much difference in power whether it is on or replaced by a RMB."

Talking

I have a custom system with DEVEK Level II headers, Custom X-pipe, Random Cats, Spin Tech mufflers, and it is all connected with full dual 3 inch stainless pipes. It is not much louder than when I had the stock system with center resonators and RMB.

This claim about being so loud is just wrong. The muffler determines the noise level, and the pitch of the exhaust note. And, yes, I live in California, and I have had my car smogged successfully several times since having this system built several years ago... I believe the car will hit 92-94 DB at full scream 6500 Rpm, (Laguna Seca Sound Booth & Muffler rating from the Manufacturer) but knowing most people, I don't think you will be doing this everyday...

You can see pixx of the system on R-List if you search for my posts with X-Pipe..

Hopes this helps to clear up the misconception...

Yes the cars do have different resonators.

PET lists the following:

928 111 094 01/ 928 111 093 01...........MY '87 - '91 large

928 111 094 04/ 928 111 093 04..........MY '87 - '95 small

I was going to experiment with the larger resonators and the RMB but I traded the RMB and the larger resonators are on the East coast.

C'est fini.

My PET shows something different:

928 111 094/093 01 MY 87 (only)
928 111 094 02 & 928 111 093 03 MY 88 - 91
928 111 094 04 & 928 111 093 04 MY 92 - 95

AFAIK the GTS resonators are larger than the 88 - 91 resonators but smaller than '87. I wouldn't know as my GTS has the small resonators and an 88/89 CS muffler.

Interesting Dave, I just double checked my PET 6 and it doesn't list the 094 02 and 093 03 resonators but does have a M637 option after 04 versions.

I have a 1988 S4 with the Test Pipe (H crossover instead of X), stock resonators (not sure if they are the large or not), and RMB.

It's loud and I like it but I also find myself going soft on the throttle around town because I think it's too loud. Not much point in having power if you don't use it...
So I'd like to change things for that reason, and because it seems to cause every other redneck in town to want to race, even if they are in a '78 ford pickup with bald tires and oil smoke spewing from the rear!

I was wondering if the Test Pipe is as beneficial as the other X type pipes and also wondering if adding some kind of free flowing mufflers, maybe in place of the resonators would muffle the sound some without giving up too much power?

If my Test Pipe isn't as helpfull as an X pipe then maybe my solution should be the 928 Specialist X pipe plus high flow cats with the RMB?
Anyone know how that combination sounds compared to Test Pipe, no cats, resonators and RMB like I have right now?

I currently have 928 Specialist X pipe plus high flow cats with resonators and original rear muffler on my GT.
Due to some other work on the car i removed the rear muffler and tried starting the car.(almost as with RMB I guess)
That was just to Way to loud for my taste.
I agree with Andrews summary, it is a little bit too quiet with the rear muffler.
Not sure if I want to do something about it, maybe try a smaller rear muffler from magnaflow or similar?

/Peter
