So for usa dumbklucks that bought Guards Red and Black....which of the two colors is more rare? Or is it a toss up? Silver seems be pretty common too.

I've got a 1988 Expresso Brown S4 5speed, with what I think is a mahogany / cashmere interior. Is there an online tool that could decode the VIN for me to check?

Thanks,
Chris

Garth,

Yes these colors do have different hues in different lighting. With my Venetian blue car, the color seems to be totally captured by the ambient lighting.

The Venice blue looks grey’ish under overcast sky...

A silver blue in direct sunlight...

A more traditional blue under shop lighting...

And almost a dark/midnight blue at night...

I think the different color hues of Venice blue metallic makes it particularly difficult to distinguish from other Porsche blues.

BTW Garth, FedEx dented my new wheel

Mahogany (of which its existence I just learned of) seems to be middle ground between Cork and Brown interior colors. I'm converting my all brown interior into Cork color change for the leather, and leaving the perfect original carpets. Looking on the 928 registry, in the early 80's whoever decided the distribution of interior colors decided on 40% brown, 40% black, 20% other colors.

Someone asked earlier if Platinum metallic #655 was a rare color, all I know is that it is listed as a "special order" color. I'm still disappointed my car's orig owner decided to paint the car. If there were a way to rub off the new paint and expose the original I'd be quite happy, I'd also like to be able to fly.. My first 944 was plat metallic, and always got compliments on it.

Default Rock Green Metallic

I had Roger's exchange student (from Sweden I think) translate "Felsengruen Metalic" to Rock Green Metallic. Not sure how rare it is, but I haven't seen another. This is another color that is hard to capture with a digital camera.

Special color is nothing special as it really only means metallic paint. Some of these are obviosly rarer than others. Really special paint option was paint to sample.

There is one '87 US model in here with mahogany interior and two smoked quartz metallic '83-84 ROW S.

I mispelled it. Should be Felsengrunmetallic. Code 699. This color was available only on 87-88 model years.

On a similar note: Black was the most common color followed by Guards Red and Grand Prix White.

I believe there are (were) two in the pacnw...one is owned by John Davis and is nougat brown exterior with the mahogany interior..(not complete..I believe is pod is black?? John?..)..and the other was owned by another pacnw lister (traded it in on a Cayenne)...and it was also nougat brown..and get this...the seats were sports.. ...I'd say that mahogany sport seats would be pretty rare..Not sure where this car ended up though.

Another rare PacNW 928 car is the one Ray Henson used to own...88S4 AT..the color was called Silver Sand I think..and the interior was Rose Royce..not sure it the whole car was a custom order..but it was the first full leather S4 I had seen..
The exterior looked like a pale gold color..and the interior was a deep red with orange tones....when anyone sat in the car it made them look red.. Bob V up in Vancouver ended up getting the car and then it moved on to someone else...not sure if it is still up in BC..or if it made its way back down stateside..

later,
Tom

Problem with all text lists is that there really should be factory color codes included. Its much more safer way of saying whats what. Names will always have spelling mistakes etc.
