I have the opportunity to purchase a 1990 zr1 red/red 25,000 mi or 1990 928GT black/black 55,000mi both cars have all maintenance records and are in excellent condition the 928GT is $4,000 less and and I cannot make up my mind, anybody please save me from the porsche, I have owned 3 928s but have never owned a ZR1, I dont like the vette colors, but a good one at a reasonable price is hard to find $20,000 to $24,000 Any advice would be helpful. I have been shopping for quite a while a good car for a decent price is sure getting hard to find. Thank you in advance for any input

You do know this is a 928 forum, right?

You come to the shark bin and ask about a choice of one or of a big plastic piece of crap. Take a wild guess which way we will sway you.
ZR-1's always looked nice on the outside, but I've never cared for thier interiors. Other than that I have no say one way or the other. Drive both first.

Go find a ZR1 forum, ask the same question and see if anyone who knows anything about working on them answers at all.
There's your answer.

Wow ZR1, I went for a ride in one of those as a 17 year old kid (new car at the time) and I was scared %*^&* with what it could do. Not as refined as the 928 but definitely a collectors car and FUN! I'd probably buy it
so long as my intent was to restore it, drive it very occasionally and keep it for a long time. If it were to be a regular driver the Porsche is the better choice without a doubt!

Actually, if you post on the NCRS site, you'd get a solid tech answer to almost anything you could possibly ask about ZR-1's, or any pre-1995 Corvette.
Here's a recent thread on the NCRS board about ZR1's. I think the big problem with them is that engine parts availability is pretty weak, above and beyond the standard crappy interior/build quality of early 90's GM products. Ask the current ZR1 owner if he's been using the ZR-1-specific anti-drainback oil filter and see what kind of response you get....

In 1990, I think the Vette was still a rather poor handling car. I owned a '66 and loved it for a lot of reasons, but handling wasn't one of them. Well, in the intervening years, little changed. I don't think it was until aound 2000 that Chevy made the car handle. Same with the build quality and the passenger compartment design. In those areas, Corvette was a complete disaster in the 80s, and it took them all of the 90s to fix that. Each year during the 90s that I looked at the new models, I'd say, "getting better", but it wasn't until maybe 99 that I thought they were finally making a car that was better than the Stingray I had. If you're not going to actually drive the car much, the Corvette might be fun.

You should drive the Vette and see how you feel about it. The C4 Vettes are known to become very rattly, squeaky cars and the interior does not even compare to the 928 in any way. The LT-5 engine is very powerful but incredibly (overly) complex and not very easy to work on at all. That being said, the ZR-1 is one of the few Vettes I would own. Good luck!

The ZR1 always had a special place in my heart because of the motor. The motor is awesome (in size and power). 32V 4Cam motor, just like our S3+ engines.
It looks almost similar to the 928 832V

You never have to worry about a timing belt with an LT5 motor. That engine was also designed by Lotus, might I add.
I'd still go for the 928....

Almost every one I have ever been in leaked, rattled, squeaked and has rather poor build construction compared the the 928.
The 928 is more refined and feels much more secure at speed.
Parts are getting to be a problem with the ZR-1's, try to find a windshield for one or a ECM and I think you will understand.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Corvettes, but there is not a whole lot of comparisons to me any way.

If you plan on driving the car much I would say the GT will retain value better over the near term , the ultra low miles Vette much of it's appeal is low miles collector etc. Longer term the Vettes have proven to pull big money on the collecter circuit 64-67 coupes at easy $50,000-100,000. So maybe the ZR-1 will in 10-20 years?? So it comes back to what you plan to use the car for , how long you plan to keep it, how significant $20,000-24,000 happens to be to you right now. I obviously believe the 928 is a better more unique car. The "problem" with the ZR-1 is it LOOKS nearly the same as a regular Vette so you spend your time telling people why the ZR-1 is special. There is NO ANSWER since you really do not NEED either car.......you just WANT...and that is an emotion and emotions by definition are NOT LOGICAL.
