Default engine stand???

I got the motor out of my 87 today, just doing some cleaning and replacing some things.

One thing that does have me a little worried is putting this big heavy motor on my engine stand.

Has any one had any problems using a stand on a compleat motor?

I will be using a Snap-On stand, but it would be very bad to have it come off of the stand.

As long as it's a four point.

You might want to get the Harbor Freight motor stand, I would be concerned with that much weight on anything with the word "snap" in it.

Isn't 800 to 1000 lbs a common rating for a motor stand? 928 is about 610 I think.

I am not so sure about the harbor freight stand, so I think I will stick to the Snap-On.

610 lbs, it should hold that.

Until the heads are off, the stand will "thank you" if you use a 4x4 under the oil pan. I bridge the 4 wheeled version what a 2x10 and place the 4x4 on it. With a 3-wheeler, use the the 4x4 directly.

Never had one break, but the droop angle is very disconcerting.

Regards,
David

I have had no problems with either my '81 or '86.5 on an engins stand. It is a 4 point stand and does have extending front legs. The only thing I had to worry about was engines being somwhat 'top' heavy as they were a real bear to turn back rightside up.

The HF one I have seen is a 4 point and is much more robust at a 2k rating. Thats the only one I would use for an actual engine build where you are yanking on stuff.

A three point is just asking for the thing to end up on your foot.

I hear you on that one, when I was doing a lot of big block chevy stuff the problems of getting the engine back to right side up is why I bought the stand I have now. It has a gear reduction crank to help turn it instead of the usual bar.

I am not sure if mine is a true 4 point stand, as it does have a center bar that
"T's" out at the end.

I will take a picture of it tomoroww and post it and a couple of before pictures of the engine and engine bay, plus what the stand looks like.

I have the HF 2000 lb stand. I paid I think $60 for it on sale, It sag's a bit but its really solid. I have no issues or worries about it tipping over. Ive felt other stands that f you bump them they can get a little "tippy"

Snap on or not, snap-on dosent make the stand they just put their sticker on it. I wouldnt think its made in China like the HF stand but they typically are of the same design. But I wouldnt try putting the complete engine on a 3 point stand. I just wouldnt try it. Invest in the biggest stand, these engines are pretty big, and pretty heavy, even being all alloy. They are pigs.

I was told when I bought mine years ago that the stand was indeed made by Snap-On, might have been bull****.

After a quick serch, I guess it is bull****, because it sure looks like this one here.

http://www.shopping.com/xPF-Sunex_in...www.google.com

It was the biggest one I could find at the time. I guess I should have looked around.

Now to find some 12MMx1.50 bolts in the right lenth for the top two bolt holes.

I had to order the bolts in that pitch long enough to go through my stand. Got them from McMasterCarr, I think... mcmaster.com
