I ran across this car on the Seattle area Craigslist. It's a '91 so I guess that means it's a "GT". I'm posting it here for educational comments and to pass it along to RL'ers who might be interested. It seems like a terrific bargain--at first glance, and without having a clue as to what a new radiator and oil cooler might be... Standard disclaimers--no affiliation, etc.
I'm not familiar at all with 928's, but have been poking around a bit lately after seeing some particularly beautiful ones and thinking one might be my next P-car--or maybe I can get my wife to trade the MBZ for one

Interesting color. In 1990 and 91 the 928 was built as an S4 or GT depending on whether or not it had a AT or 5-speed. ATs were S4s and 5Ms were GTs. Great cars, I highly recommend one....

The new radiator will cost at least $1000. I don't know how much those external oil coolers run but in typical Porsche fashion, I'm sure they're not cheap. After that, there's the issue of how much engine damage was done after the car was overheated due to a broken radiator. I'd offer $6-$7K because who knows what else is wrong with it.

I think this car has been discussed before, but as always, never buy a 928 without a PPI, or contingent on the PPI being sane.
And fixing the radiator could be as cheap as $200 or $300, which leads me to think the owner is flipping even at $11k and doesn't have a clue what the true condition may be.

I want it because it is green, and an automatic, and a reasonable price. I think it is only realistic to expect some money investment after purchase. Mark Thomas puts it this way: Think what this car cost new, and what it is. Then think how long it will last and how well it will perform. What can you get for the price that's comparable? And what would you spend if it was a new car and you kept it another five years? The purchase price is reasonable to me because I would keep it forever, because it is green.......and I am a vegan.

Nice color....but a known broken radiator and oil cooler......that is really scary.....so how hot and low of oil did this 928 get before the owner figured it out? Most answers are not good.....but if the rest of the car looks good & you can determine that the engine is still okay (compression-leakdown test) then it might be worth a discount off his asking price! Realistically the owner should pay $1-2K to fix it.....then sell it for $15K+ that it is worth in working condition......

It looks like some paint is missing from the bumper and the hood is not aligned. I might take a look at for fun if it still for sale next week.

Where does it say in the ad that it overheated? Am I missing something? I like the color. BTDT on the radiator replacement…Oil cooler should be no big deal. This would be the perfect time to throughly check everything and install a DEVEK radiator anyway.
What would the best course of action be to determine the condition of the engine? Compression check with leak down?
Anybody know anything about this cars history?

It may need a new rad & oil cooler because it had a run-in with a steep driveway or curb and lost. Something of that nature could explain the bumper and hood as well. I'd say look for deeper damage as well; for example, make sure the front lower A-Arm mounts/bolts are not bent back, look for damage to pan, A/C or Alternator mounts, etc.
