You are correct. I guess that I didn't explain it properly. Thank you.

Hmmmm.. This is news to me. I've alway used either a tap or a die to clean, straighten, and to cut new treads. Never had a problem using them and never even knew there was a seperate chaser set.

Well, here's what Two Guys had to say:

"Before installing new fasteners into an engine, clean the threads in the holes using a thread-cleaning chaser.
Don't mistake the thread-cleaning chaser for a traditional thread cutting tap. The chasers are strictly used as cleaning taps, not to cut threads, and are designed with the correct thread pitch and diameter to clean dirty blind or thru holes without causing thread damage. A set of cleaning taps is an essential tool to a serious engine builder."

They must be something like a pre-dulled taps and dies, right? I can see how taps/dies can cause damage if not used properly. They need to be backed 1/2 a turn every now and then or else the built up of removed metal will damage the treads. Also using lubridants during tap/die use is a must.

Bill is correct. I have a complete set of each. Thread chasers are made slightly smaller to clean debris without damage.

I need to get some chasers. Snap on site is not search-Friendly. A snap on guy drives by my office every few days though. Maybe I can run out in the road infront of him and flag him down. Call my wife if you don't hear from me.

I picked up a set of metric thread chasers from McMaster-Carr recently. I've only used the 14.5x1.5 to clean wheel studs, but worked very well. ~$35 for I think 12 external thread chasers and a file or two.

If you go to the thread chaser page it's the last one on the bottom. $31.88.

Check Sears catalog. They have a 40 peice SAE and metric interior and exterior thread chaser with files for $39.00.

I am going to go to the local sears and see if they have them on hand, otherwise I will order it online.

The price is supposed to be valid til 12/30/06 so get your orders in now if your interested.

I am concerned that the size required to clean the threads of the head stud holes is too big to fit down there?
