Make sure you check the heads for "trueness" as well. One could be warped even if it isn't cracked.

I find it hard to believe that the coolant would flow through like that. I hope it's just a HG, but my gut tells me that you're in for more... Damn, I really hope I'm wrong.

With the nose jacked in the air, coolant added to the expansion tank has to flow up hill to enter the thermostat bridge ....

Steve,
Did you check to see if there was previously antifreeze in the system - and have you had freezing temps recently?

Is it possible that you hooked up the coolant tank overflow line to the oil filler? (I don't know whether there's a connection in the 81).

This has nothing to do with coolant in the oil, but the original post had some responses referring to the amount of oil added. The dipstick being in the front of the engine, if you use it to see how much you need when the front end is jacked up will take much more oil than required.

Using the dipstick to check oil level must be done when the car is level or you will put in at least 1.5-2 quarts too much.

garth, we have had some freezing temperature lately, but when all of this happened it was in a heated garage and had been driven a while before the oil change...

thanks

thanks Bill, i know i'm gonna be needing some help. today i got down to the heads... the throttle was filled with the oil/coolant mixture.. yuck!!!, i got to the front of the engine to take off the oil fill area and realized my dad must have taken his allen wrenches to work with him. i have some at home, but i think i'm done for the day.... tomorrow, i'm gonna bring my allens to remove that stuff and then remove timing cover and belts (as of right now, i have to hit the manuals to prepare for tomorrow, unless someone has an easier to understand step by step to remove those belts and all.) then i'll problem pull the heads off, and with all luck see nothing wrong but a broken gasket.

by the way, i would appreciate any and all pointer you might have for my quest of tomorrow..... i have to admit, i'm kinda nervous about messing with timing.

thanks again

hello everyone.... just giving you a status... i'd say about half way to getting those heads out. check out these two pics: http://s136.photobucket.com/albums/q...vius/teardown/

1467 = where i left off today
1468 = at this point it looks like they made a gasket instead of using a real one
(it's like that through out both block seams)

You probably going to need a complete gasket kit on this one.
