I am sitting here thinking about the tentioner roller and how it is not centered on the belt.. Did i forget to put the spacer back in behind the arm???? I already have the cover on and all te parts back on that have to come off to get to it.

does anyone have a pix of a tentioner roller on the belt?

thanks
Kyle

Just took these ten minutes ago from a '79 Euro engine. Hope it helps.

WSM Volume I, page 15-10 provides a clear, detailed, exploded view of the assembly.

If the tensioner is set to the proper tension, I would think that after a few rotations, the belt would center itself to a point. If the belt is too loose, I would think it would roll outward that way.

Of course, I don't actually know what I'm talking about, just guessing that the belt would behave this way.

How many times have you rotated the engine by hand?

Until you run the engine for a few seconds to settle the belt, it may track wherever it wants.
...

JP,

What's up with that bastard front pulley?

about 8 on the crank. the belt centered right up everywhere else. In fact i am now starting to wonder if it did center up on the pully too. I just didnt notice... I have to take it apart to see. If its off, Ill post pix

if it is sitting that far off on the roller, I would be careful as the belt may rub on the arm.

It happens. When we took T's tensioner apart, we noticed that the previous owner had done the same thing. His TB was running way off the edge and the roller had so much lateral play that it could rub against the arm. Man, I'm glad you caught that before you started running.

Is your tensioner dry? You mentioned previously that you didn't do anything to it when you were in there. My belt was riding about 1/4" off of that same roller and the only thing that was not right about the whole set-up is that the tensioner was dry and the tensioner boot was hard as a rock, and cracked. The belt had just barely started grazing the Tensioner Arm and luckily the bolt wasn't bent yet.
Also, if you haven't been able to check the tension yet, maybe the belt is too tight?
