to-do list to make my 4.7l faster
my 83 is referred to as the 'slow' porsche.
and i got the feeling as if the family van could challenge me.
so that gotta be changed
now i am wondering about the cheapest ways to improve performance.
and then work myself up to the top of spendings after a while.
some of the things are ovious like new leads and stuff...
i am going to get my new electric fan (courtesy of carl) that should do something.
but what else do you people know?
(i can't afford to buy a gts... so don't even come up with that idea)

Start with the exhaust, Headers, X-pipe, etc
Remove the air pump, then replace the cats with high flow ones that don't need an air pump.
You could also increase your timing. I think your belt is round tooth, get a the PorKen timing indicators to dial in your timing, then advance it for some ponies.
Check the accelerator cable for any slack, how's your throttle response?
Other than that, SUPERCHARGE it.

Kevin Johnson posts here and there was a lengthy thread a while back (i think before you joined) about the crank scrapers. I had the engine out replacing bearings at the time and I bought one to help prevent possible oiling issues.

But I think he might have forgotten.
If I buy your car I will be staying with you in your apartment. When I bought my third it was just before christmas... I had to drive to New York to pick it up... I don't think I'll try that trick again....
but honey it's your xmas present to me

find a euro intake and throttle body after the headers, and maybe the euro 82 cam, or '79cams if you can find a set. do the cam when you have to do a timing belt job
with all these bolt on mods you will go from 190ish rwhp to over 240rwhp!! (ie intake, headers, and cams)
timing wont help that much. just over stock timing is best for best HP. 3 degrees farther and you pick up 3 whopping ft-lbs of peak torque, and loose 3hp. (ie 23 degrees with vacuum disconnected and at 3000rpm, vs spec 20 degrees) this was the difference between about 38 max advancement vs 41 degrees max advancement.

Before getting into a bunch of modifications make sure the engine is running close to spec. There are a lot of things that could be wrong if it really is low on power. Plugged cats? Bad fuel pressure regulator? Misaligned cam(s)? Weak spark? Clogged injectors? Clogged air filter? Slack throttle cable?
A $100 dyno session will tell you a lot. Get the air/fuel ratio data. Looking at the power, torque and mixture lines will tell you if the car is running close to spec.

CeeDee-
Like me, I suspect that you are one of the younger people who post on here regularly. And though I might certainly be wrong...I have to ask one question before I advance ideas on how to make your 4664 cc V8 more powerful: How much do you have to spend?
-My '85 S2 5 speed, which is just some gray-market car that I found and now [finally!] have running right, can get into the 13's in a quarter mile, if you abuse the car. It is certainly as fast as an S4 5 speed, and below 100 mph I bet it would simply embarrass an S4 automatic, not to mention all the 2-valve US models pre-'85. And it has the same engine as your car: a 4664 cc 2-valve V8. The secrets? The cams and the intakes. Retrofit to your car- not viable from an economic sense.
If you want to go real damn fast, and want to do it on the cheap in a 928...look for an ROW car, such as what I drive. VIN: WP0ZZZ...if you find a "ZZZ" car then you've found the answer to your quest for ponies. If the 10th digit of the VIN code is "E" or "F" or "G", then you've found a double winner- an ROW with the LH-jetronic injection similar to the '85-86 32 valve US cars. A 10th digit "G" where the last four digits are later than 1000 is the ultimate winner; this car not only has the performance of a 928GT, but it has the later S4 brakes and suspension.
See where I'm going with this? If you want a faster car- BUY one. You can't easily modify your car to be significantly faster than it already is. You can do that with 951's, but they obviously don't have the class the 928 has. And they sound like a damn chevette-
N!

The quest for a little more power is like malaria, even with treatment it comes back every few months. Cheapest way to go is to figure about what you REALLY want, and go directly from point A to point B, skipping the baby steps.
I like Normy's idea. How about nitrous while shopping for Euro parts? or Swapping in a 87+ motor?

Make sure your throttle and kick down cables are adjusted properly. Also make sure your car is in proper tune. THen you can make it go faster, corner sharper and stop faster FOR FREE. Just remove every unnecesary piece from your car and make it lighter. That is the cheapest mod if your main concern is going fast.

Although I think ceedee's budget may not stretch to include that one super-hop-up part #ZZZ (description: a complete rare 928), it is good advice nonetheless for those who are seeking a 928... and when these rare birds pop up sometimes they are bargains indeed!

Check for Vac leaks, tune up and baseline the car. Take the old head pipe off the car and punch out the guts of the cat with a piece of iron rod. Assuming you are emissions exempt that is. If your spark plug wires are original to the car, replace them.
BTW, a RMB will not really make you faster, but it sure does sound fast. Headers, etc. are for keeper cars, as they do cost a couple of bucks.
