Very Nice 86 in O.C., CA for $8k

A month or so ago I was negotiating with a man in O.C. for his 86 charcoal with gray-green leather interior 928. It had chrome phone dials. 76K on the clock. Had been sitting unregistered for a year, though. At the time he said he would take no less than $10k. After Rob Edwards looked at it for me and gave me some feedback, I offered him $8k. He said he would not take less than $10k because he just put $8k into maintenance (Timing belt broke requiring some new valves, belt, etc. - work was done by a good shop).
The seller e-mailed me last night and said he has decided to sell the car for $8k, after all. Too late for me.
The car is cosmetically in excellent shape. Leather and exterior are very good. What I do know of needs are: new tires, some major A/C work (jhe said he got an estimate of $1100) and some other minor stuff like an alignment and ride height adjustment.
Had he not been so pigheaded a month ago, it would be in my garage now. But he waited too long to come to my price and I have my 928 now.
If anyone is interested, PM or e-mail me and I can send along more info.

Sounds nice, 76k miles is low. Did the mileage check out on carfax? Might be a better deal than the one I am looking at. Post what you know.

Money spent to fix a shredded belt doesn't make the car worth that much more.
It's worth about the same before breaking and after fixing. He should take his hosing like a man and sell it for $5K.

I ran an autocheck and the mileage did check out. It had been a MA car that then went to AZ for quite a while before ending up in Aliso Viejo. the only thing I noted in the Autocheck was that it had only gone about 6K in the last three years, and in the pictures I could tell it had not been registered in over a year. So, it sat in his garage, basically neglected.
Rob test drove it and maybe he can give more detail. He sent me a ton of great detail photos, which I no longer have but he might. He said it ran well when he drove it, but at least two of the tires will need almost immediate replacement. All of the electrical except the rear hatch release (and A/C) worked.
I think there is also a power steering leak, but not a significant one.
At the time I was dealing with him, he was open to a PPI.
My opinion is that for $8K it's a great deal. I had offered him that as a starting point and would have gone as high as $9K, but he just said "I won't take less than $10K" so I kept walking.

I agree that claiming $8K in repairs didn't mean much, but it did mean new TB and WP and other little maintenance items were less than 1K old.

The seller is named Ken Lahners. He is not a Rennlister or very knowledgable about cars. He is in South OC (Aliso Viejo). His e-mail address is jlahners2@***.net.

Sorry, didn't mean to be so negative. I have seen so many owners that add maintenance into what they think a car is worth and are "stuck" at a certain price. They somehow want to recoup every dollar into the car, which is nuts. There is a certain cost that goes along with ownership, and it doesn't necessarily add anything to the car's resale value when money has been spent.

The color is meteormetallic and it is almost the exact same car as mine originally if it is an '86.5. Mine doesn't have a full leather interior.

It sounds like he swallowed his hubris now, though.
