This is a very nice car cosmetically, almost everything worked (with the notable exception of the HVAC- totally dead), and I took it on a brief test drive, though the ride height is absurdly low (check the front spoiler clearance in pic #5), and one of the tires couldn't have had more than 20 psi in it, so I never got over 50 mph or so. The car has clearly been sitting for a long time, Matt noticed that the registration wasn't current. The PO showed me the receipt (~$4600) for the engine repair.

There's a little waviness in the dash around the glovebox, and two small cracks in the pod, but the pictures otherwise don't do the interior justice- it's damn clean. The stereo in it is ghetto-fabulous, but it does sound good. Only 2 small scratches on the body (see pics), and the paint is in great shape. No signs of repairs that I could see, all the panel lines were straight. The chrome phone dials are beautiful. The front and rear spoliers are present, straight, and look to be in good shape. There are drilled rotors on one end, I don't recall which, and the brake pads are nice n thick. There are the standard PS and oilpan leaks, and I forgot to test the motor mounts.

Overall, I think that this would be a great car for someone willing to do a bunch of mechanical refreshing, since the cosmetics are really, really nice.

Here are the pics I shot:

Seeing this one has convinced me to pass on the one I was looking at. This car has more going for it but is out of my price range for a second car. Thanks for the post.

Man,
This is one darn good looking shark. I would jump all over this if I was in the market

Thanks for the post,

SMOG GUYS / ALISO VIEJO 4RLV122 WP0JB0928GS860598 PORSC 928 1986 10/15/2003 03:25 p.m.

Thats the most recent Ca smog I see.

This car makes me feel real good so far on the car I am taking to Greg on Monday. I can understand the guys feeling that he just put a lot of money in the car, but what it tells me is that he probably didn't do any kind of PM on it at all if the TB was neglected. Isn't this more the sort of car you really want to avoid, not buy and play catchup on the last three years PM?

I am just asking here, BTW, not commenting. My expectation is that I don't want to see $3k to $5k of known problems on a 86 for $8k, but I am not as much in love with the low mileage as I know many buyers are.

I love the colors, but I showed my wife and she was turned off by what she termed the "lizardskin" interior.

Pigheaded? $10K does not sound pigheaded to me for a nice 86, $8K sounds downright lowball in my opinion.

What keeps my head spinning is that people are saying all the time, high mileage doesn't matter, but when a lower mileage car shows up its like that is the ONLY thing that matters, and if your getting a car for yourself I don't see it.

How does somebody get the idea that an $8k car doesn't need 4 matching good tires? Not even new, NICE 225 tires are so common used, a full matching set should be no more than $300 mounted.

My personal view is this guy has one more level of disgusted to go before someone walks, er trailers, away with that car for $5k or $6k. Put another $5k of repairs in and you easily have a car worth $9k.

Cleaning up a stack of old papers I found this cars VIN WP0JB0928GS860598 scribbled as a note, googled to this old thread, and checked smog history.

I'm wondering who bought it? No Calif smog since then, so maybe it went out of state?

Sometimes I wonder about that one that got away, too. I've never stalked it online, though. I only do that with girls that got away.

It would have been my dream color combo, but I'm happy with my 86.5 5-speed no rub strips.

One interesting note: most of the people in that thread over five years ago are still here. And Rob Edwards continues to be an invaluable member of the community.

I agree... Looking at the pics, the tires, etc, it appears the current owner "probably" hasnt spent any $$ that he didnt have to... I paid what I consider TOP DOLLAR ($12K) on my 86.5, GPW, 5 Speed with 41K miles (LOW MILES), gorgeous Black & Champagne interior, new 18" RH 3 Part wheels with new Hankook V12s, TONS of receipts, etc, etc, etc... and I STILL spent $3K in preventative maintenance & some nicer odds & ends. I now have approx $15K into a $12K car... and its ALMOST done... almost and, thats just the way it works
