Default 928 Race Car project: A Quick Update (more detailed later)

*

*** THIS THREAD IS OLD! Check on page 5 for current updates

I usually would make separate threads for each of these projects, but I am so behind on the updates that I'm just making one thread with several posts. I haven't worked on the car since the end of July (due to school), but I will be finishing it up between January and March depending on how much time I get to work on it. What's left? Bodywork/filler primer, paint exterior, put the whole thing back together, a few small electrical things, and DONE! I would have finished it last summer, but I had other obligations for the first month. I probably have 3-4 weeks of solid work ahead of me. Here is what the car looked like when I got it, and several weeks after I had started work, just to give you an idea of how far I have come.

In case anyone is wondering, every minute of work, minus the 3-4 hours or so pops helped me do some sanding, every minute of work was performed by yours truly.

The car currently runs and drives; all mechanical work is complete.

Default Hammer/Dolly work

Ok, here is one of the aspects I worked on this past summer (I am only going to post up the main parts of the summer's work). This work was done with a ball peen hammer and shot bag, then smoothed out with a hammer/dolly. This was my first time using a hammer and dolly, so it isn't perfect, but it's pretty darn good. I just eyeballed it and outlined what I thought I wanted, then went with the flow. It is probably about 2" flared over stock, give or take a bit.

Picture 1: Fenders, before, rolled with a piece of tubing
2: Roughing out the shape with the ball peen hammer
3: The finished product, more or less.

I have about 15 hours into the fenders, most likely. Getting them to match was the hardest part.

Here are a few misc. things.

Pic 1: The CF dash and dyed tunnel cover thing, these will be going back into the car soon.

2: Headlight setup... this is Ken's old lights and mounts. They will need a bit of modification. I came up with the idea of getting a clear LED (blinks amber) and will be mounting it as the turn signal since the marker light holes have been filled.

3: Building the splitter on an S4 bumper. The stock fenders were cut/welded for the S4 bumper and I made some braces for the fenders. The drop on the splitter is 1/16 6061 and the base is 1/8" 6061. There is also a lip in the center which will be riveted on after paint to eliminate the gap between the splitter and the body of the car below the radiator.

4: Finished splitter/bumper mounting

Default Paint prep

Closer to the end of summer, I finally started prepping for the paint booth.

Pic 1: Final mock-up before tear-down and clean

2 and 3: At body shop (thanks to Collision Tech in Atlanta for letting me use the space!) with the car masked off and perfectly clean, waiting for the first coat of epoxy primer.

The mirror you see is a set that I bought used from a guy, they are jacquemonds. I would never pay the jacquemond price for them... they are nothing special. I got em for a good deal.

Default Interior painting finished

I don't have any pictures of the car in just black epoxy primer, but here is the interior, finished, ready to be put back together. It has two coats of Southern Polyurethanes epoxy primer (best stuff there is, GREAT company, GREAT prices, BETTER products than DuPont which costs 2x+ more), two light coats of red, and two light coats of clear.

Pic 4 is the roll cage junction at the base of the main hoop, passenger side.

Yes, I did take a few hints from Mark A's car on the roll cage. Thanks, Mark!

Great ideas, thanks for sharing. How's the ingress and egress with the rollcage structure where your legs swing in? I can't wait to see it on track, what orginizations will you race with?

Default now

This is how the car looked before I covered it at the beginning of August. The gray is filler primer, and the black is the epoxy. After I do the bondo work, the rest of the car will be painted with 2k primer, sanded, basecoat-ed (don't ask me the exterior design and color... it's a secret!), cleared, color sanded, etc. Yeah I know it is a race car, but I am a designer and have a mind for aesthetics. I'm hoping to have it featured in a magazine when I'm done. If you have any questions or comments, ask away! I've done hundreds of things to it, but these are some of the more obvious facets.
