928 Race Car project: Consolidated update, new stuff!
#62
it put so much more downforce that it keep the car from turning in for medium and high speed turns and gave one heck of a push on the exit of all turns!
Ive since removed 8 degrees of wing and still have near 160lbs of downforce at 120mph! im sure the relaxed setting, will produce enough downforce to keep the rear end planted to get the original objective of being able to get on the gas earlier at the apex and exit of most all turns. that part is pretty cool. the push is not! Ill get a splitter to match and make it all balance out. sure would like to try the pining of the rear weisach now too!

ive been driving the nurburgring lately in addition to terrorising the uk motorways (currently sitting on 12 points - i thought the object was to get more ) my car is in a streetable condition and runs on street tyres along with 650/ 425 springs. the car is really forgiving with late braking into turns and fluffed gear changes rarely inducing oversteer, the back hardly ever steps out but the front gets pushed.. so ive increased the front tyre size - that helped. and now ive added the rear swaybar from carl and that has reduced understeer and made the car more sensitive to weight transfer (read oversteer!)...
anyway i was interested to know how the wing was affecting the handling, is it inducing more understeer?

Well guys, it's been two years and several people have asked me about my race car project, so I figured I'd throw a quick update in here. I'm going to do a full thread about the whole journey sometime later, but I just wanted to throw in some pictures to show you guys what it looks like now.
We've taken it on the track three times so far, and it has performed magnificently. We couldn't have asked for more. The handling is incredible. The only problem is the old missing water trick the engine is pulling on me... I'm losing about a quart for every 30 min. on the track. Hopefully the engine will hold for another year or so until I have the time/money to replace it.
Upgrades coming soon consist of:
1. Widening wheels (new outer halves rear, new inner halves front) to allow for 335 rear and 305 front Toyos. Next year, I will be putting new outers on the front as well and widening the front fenders to increase the front track, but I'll be doing this for the interim. I'm running 2" spacers on the rear wheels right now, so this upgrade will eliminate those beasts. I hope to have this done within February.
2. A full graphics package. I've had the cutter and the vinyl for a while now, but haven't had time to fully design my graphics. Hopefully I can get this done in the next month or two (or three--not as high on the list as other things right now).
Unfortunately, since I was doing all of the work and a lot of the driving, I don't have any good pictures of it on the track. Here is a quick photstream of the past two years of work:
Interior (some minor changes have happened since '07):
Seats:
New battery (will probably cut this whole steel tub out and move battery):
Wetsanding (notice OLD exhaust outlet and warped rear bumper):
Yep, I cut up my clean paint job to take out the steel wing mounts I made sooo long ago. Also shown are the new mounts that are welded into the panel gap between the hatch and body:
Covering the rear bumper in vinyl, as I didn't have the time to build a new paint boot to paint it (Thanks to Shawn/Fabio421 for a stellar deal on the bumper to replace the crap old one):
Changed the exhaust exit, as the can sticking off the back looked like I was taking design cues from ricers:
Rear, right before it was finished, to show the new exhaust route:
Another picture of the rear, showing the tow hook, wing mounts, and lexan hatch/supports:
Brake cooling duct:
My trusty helper:
Wait for it.....
Here it is now!
Front:
Pass side (red on wheel is vinyl so I could get an idea of how it looks--I plan on painting the wheel halves next year when I widen the front fenders):
I'd like to say thanks to all of you for the compliments. Even moreso, I want to thank everyone that has given me advice in the past, as well as those who have built cars themselves and posted up how they did it. The search function was used so many times, and it almost never failed me. This community is incredible, and I owe so much to it. If you have any questions about the car, let me know. I hope to see some of you at the track soon!
Anyone know why I picked 464 for the number?

Your project looks great.A lot of fine work going there.
I would like to let you know that I had a similar single pipe exhaust on my 84 Euro and over 3500 rpm it was like having to blow through a straw.
I replaced this single with an early factory dual exhaust , adding an X pipe would also give you about 25 more horses
I am very happy with the dual system as now the car pulls strong from 90 MPH where B4 it was very lethargic with the single exhaust.
For the losing water/coolant try replacing the coolant bottle cap.
Goodluck with your project

Thanks guys!
Dave-
I saw your car "finished" before I finished mine, and I was jealous! You have an awesome car there, and I definitely took some cues from your car when finishing mine.
Brendan-
Laying down vinyl is a steep learning curve, and there were lots of choice words thrown around when I was teaching myself. It's all about your technique and patience. Heatgun, stretching, squeegee... and patience.
Mrmerlin-
Thanks for the tips, but no worries about the exhaust here. It is straight-thru mufflers in 3.5" piping. Check Louie Ott's dynographs for single 3.5" compared to dual exhaust. I made a custom y-pipe as well, and it's about as free flowing as it gets. No straws here. Also, thanks for the tip on the radiator cap. I actually purchased a lower pressure cap from Carl at 928M and it helped the issue considerably. I am losing about half the water I used to be.
Mark-
Thanks again. 3.5". Hopefully one day we can rendezvous at a track in the midwest.
Ok... the number came from my desire for an obscure 3-digit number so I would never have to worry about someone else at the track having the same number. I thought 928 was a little cheesy, so I just split it in half. Still cheesy, I know, but at least I have a reason for it.

man , that's great when such old threads pop up with updates...
really love to read it and study the pics ...great job you have done Mark, nice graphics...
only thing i'm concerned is the roll cage, i couldn't climb in or out with my old body and bad back .... i had to make mine so my legs can pass the doorway as with no cage....
