Yeah I was only speculating. Jumped belt or seized water pump are definitely the most likely candidates at this point.

Dennis
I hope its not that bad....riding in your car and feeling the difference......its really amazing what a couple suspension-wheels/tires mods do to improve the handling! A few hundred pounds less doesn't hurt either :>)

I hope the news comes back good and you can be back on the track soon!

Brian - from the look on your face yesterday, I'd say we'd have another track addict in the making!

Its a given.....I'm already thinking of ways to come up with a track 928.....hmm where could I find a 5 speed S4?? Bummer is I don't see it happening for a couple years.....so mine will have to do for now :>)

Its just too much fun!! Everyone should try it!!

Thanks H. It took that long because I had to start on my hose while waiting for Dennis to return, then climb up on the flatbed tow-truck to retieve Dennis' hose (have you seen how low his car is? thankfully he doesn't have a belly pan), then lower one corner of my metal belly pan and twist/bend my arm in every possible direction to get that F#@&ing hose clamp loose, then reverse the process. Would have been a no-brainer without the belly pan in the way.

I don't think my hose was secured properly to the fan shroud, and thus it was able to contact the belt. Radiator hoses are being added to the spare parts box.

And don't get me wrong, I had a great time....beats going to work!

Dennis very sorry to hear about your problems. Now a trip to the "House of Pain" , Dr Moreau will want to mix in some Chevy rods , Scatt crank, Nickasil , JE pistons, Ott Intake, 968 valves .... but this is sounding more like the plot from Six Million dollar man than H. G. Wells. The engine is locked up ? will not turn on the starter motor?

Jim
The engine would crank very slowly under its known weak battery.....we managed to start it using my jump box & it ran roughly for a few seconds...but died as soon as Dennis let off the gas.???

On my '80 I've got to pull the hose up pretty far onto the inlet to get it away from the PS pump. Surely tied down to the fan shroud. I still check for dimples.

There's a thread: contents of DE kit. Lemme see, brake pads, brake lines, brake master, brake fluid, clutch master, clutch slave, clutch black hose, assorted seals and sealing rings. assorted bolts and nuts and small mech. parts, box of electrical spares, extra lug nuts, fan belt, upper heater hose.

Then there's the tools...

FWIW I find it necessary to trim about 3/4" off the standard lower hose at the radiator end to get a comfortable clearance between the hose & the belts.

yep, been racing pretty much anything w/a motor (snowmobiles, boats, dirt bikes, off road cars, now the 928) since I was 13yrs old, and it does get into your blood... you do have to have well maintained stuff, and be more pro-active in the maintenance to avoid DNF's for sure, but it's not a huge effort once you get stuff dialed in.

There's a real nice PCA AX being setup in bakersfield this sunday at the airport, part of a whole PCA Pcar weekend festival (concours on fri, rallye sat, AX sunday) alledgedly the little cars get into 5th on the backstretch, so that means at least 3rd for a 928 w/a 4sp AT... whoo hoo!!!

I've been doing the Zone 8 AX thing, as much as possible, and it's a total hoot as well.... variety of courses so you don't get bored, will definately make sunday at least, got too many kid soccer games for sat. but the rallye looks like a real hoot too...

if ya have time, it's well worth the $40.00, which includes lunch

A cricket, the "Jimminy" type?

i bet there are a lot of little spring mechanizms you could even set tension with and be as accurate as the kempf tool! a spring loaded plunger with a little scale on the side comes to mind. calibrate it first on your car after setting it to spec and off you go. never need to pull the cover again.

Hi Dennis, what happened??

tell me youre not using Mobil 1 first of all. Second, you dont have to throw a rod for the bearings to be in bad shape. remember scot, his just locked up as he let off the gas going around turn 2 at laguna. the 2/-6 bearing just welded the crank to the rods. Nothing broke though. as we rotated the engine, it loosened up a bit, but it was all bad news inside. why the timing light went on, is odd. lets hope its something siezed in the pump or something else.

was it running funny or did the light just prompt you to shut it down?

let us know what you find!

If a 2/6 rod bearing is damaged, what are the external symptoms of this? It didn't throw a rod through the block. Could there be so much rotational resistance from a bad rod bearing that a car would be hard to start or die during idle? Or cause a belt tension light to come on?

If its skipped a few teeth like mine did at the SpeedGT qualifying in '04, it will start but run real rough and not idle on its own. that was 2-3 teeth skip. you can check that by moving crank to TDC on #1 cylinder compression stroke and seeing if the quick check points line up.
