Default My 928: People love it or hate it, why?

I don't understand it! I have had several '"toys" over the years, but have not had so many people so opinionated about the car. I have friends, neighbors, strangers, and co-workers all have something to say. Many people like it, and are passionate about it, and I have had several people just as passionate about not liking it. The car has been even called "a chic car", which I don't agree with at all (afterall it is a V8 and rwd, and is fast) . I don't ask for opinions, but I sure get them. I like the car very much. I like the way it looks, drives, and the fact it is "different". The fact that it is not American and I live near Detroit probably has something to do with the negativeness.

My brother-in-law used to work at GM in Brighton, and said people who drove foreign cars in those days would keep them in their garages with the door closed. Pretty amazing, no? I remember riding on the highway when we visited and counting like 15 or 20 American nameplates before seeing a foreign nameplate. A different world ...

At Diamler-Chrysler where my friend works, if you don't drive a car that's in their "family" you're not allowed to park in the covered garage. You get shunned out to some remote lot in the boonies.

Few weeks ago someone from the Shelby GT500 design team asked me what I did to my 928 - it sounded to loud / cool. I thold him that was the #1 thing wrong with the Shelby, it's too quiet.

He drove a new GT500 from Detroit for the weekend. Even under throttle you couldn't hear anything but the blower whine. These cars are timeless.

It`s interesting,my wife and i put our shark in 3 car shows this year, which included mostly muscle cars...a lot of guys sort of snub the car with a quick look as they pass by...but their wives or girlfriends would almost always stop to check out the car...as soon as they would see the Porsche emblem they would look at me and smile.....i wonder why?

Steve,

Can't relate to the 'hate it' part. I guess you're right it must be a Detroit area thing.

I can't understand why some Porsche (air cooled) owners and fans don't like the 928, what's not to like ?

Here in Missouri most people always compliment or point at mine (partly because of the awesome electric blue paint?) and say cool car or something. Only some of my freinds or the mustang owners make fun or snub.

bigmac, I can't move to Ann Arbor, I went to Mich State. I couldn't handle being subjected to the U of M fightsong on a regular basis.

I get the same "respect" with mine.....of course your has alot more "street cred" than mine with your S/C.......

Probably the best comments I got was at the drag strip.....my 928 wasn't super quick...but quite respectable for a bone stock 18 year old car with an auto, open diff & 2.20 rear end....14.54 with a easy start isn't bad & I won both of my races against an 99 M3 and a 02 Mustang Mach 1......the BMW crowd (two guys with M3's) came up to me after the 1st race (after they lost) & said...."Thats got a flat six?!?!?" I loved my answer as I popped the hood...."no no no....this is a 5.0L 32V V8 that is bone stock and 18 years old!" The look on the M3's owner was priceless....

We had a little car show here at work during our regular Friday "Beer Bash".... Classics & hot rods owned by employees. I ended up on the end behind a '61(?) Fleetwood, so I was probably in the least visible spot. All of the comments I received were positive -- one lady kept gushing about how she loved the car, loved the wheels, etc as her husband kept pulling her hand to drag her away... some folks talked to me for a while, some just sort of glanced and kept walking.

I guess the biggest "respect" I got was that there were numerous 911 owners(912, 964, 993, 996), a couple 944 & 951 owners, and a 924 owner that weren't allowed to be part of the show because as the organizer put it, "they just aren't interesting enough".

Though there was some pretty cool stuff there... a Sprite, a Pantera, couple Ferraris, a 1-owner Shelby GT500 convertible, to name a few.

Have the people who call it a "chic car" sit in while you put it through it's paces.

Better idea....have the chicks sit in your car while you take them a spin. Should get their boyfriend's attention. Or, have him sit in the rear seat.

I'm an MSU alumnus, but I still get props on the shark daily in Ann Arbor!

Never any negative comments...that's kinda strange.
