My negative comments mostly come from "muscle car guys". I like (and have had several) muscle cars. I like sports cars, too. In my eyes the 928 has the V8 sound and performance of a muscle car and the handling of a sports car. It is a little of both, which I why I decided to buy one. If money and garage space allowed it, I would have a 928 and an American muscle car. The bottom line is: I love the car, that's all that really matters. And the fact that it has a backseat for my kids, also helps.

The 928 has a unique chararcter. It is very polarizing. It was way ahead of its time when it was introduced. Many people were and are not comfortable with it being different.

Whcih is also why you will never again see Porsche make a car with a such radical design. What you will see in the future will be more mainstream. Porsche can't afford to lose sales because of a controversial style.

bigmac, I can't move to Ann Arbor, I went to Mich State. I couldn't handle being subjected to the U of M fightsong on a regular basis.

My wife and son-in-law are MSU grads. Come on over, the fight song will be quiet once basketball season is upon us.

I was parked on the main street of a small town the other day, and a couple came out of a store to get in their car and I heard the woman say, "Now THAT'S a nice looking Porsche". Made me feel wicked good.

I live in an area where boxsters are as common as Miatas. 911s are commonplace as well. There are a couple of Carrera GTs around here as well as AMs, Bentley GTs, etc. Many of these people are not car enthusiasts, but status enthusiasts with more money for their cars than passion for their cars. They don't drive their cars. They wear them. They don't give my car a second look, because they don't have any appreciation for it.
However there are people around here who truly have a passion for cars. Those people are men, women and children of all ages & from all economic backgrounds, driving minivans or Vanquishes. They're the people who can't take their eyes off of a '63 XKE with the top down. These are the people who admire a 928.
Ignoring a 928 is a learned thing. Admiring a 928 is an instinctual thing. Just look at the kids in the next school bus that you pass.

I can understand the 'chick car' comment. The 928 reminds me in a lot of ways of the 924, which definitely has the reputation of being 'the girly porsche'. They both have nondescript, subtle styling, mostly dictated by aerodynamics. There isn't a lot of the flash like you see with Ferrari's (i.e. Testarossa chines) or Lamborghini/Delorean (faceted body panels) or muscle cars (i.e. Mustang, Dodge SRT, etc.) There is a sort of feminine understatedness to the 928.

At the time, this was revolutionary styling, but then everyone and their mother started adapting it (Ford Probe, Nissan 300ZX) and it became rather commonplace. Ironically, now that styling has moved on and there are a million copies of every modern car design on the road, the 928 style is rare again.

I could care less -- I drive Porsches for their handling, power, and affordability -- Not as a status symbol. If other people hate the style, good for them -- It's a free country.

I don't usually classify cars by what geder they would be appropriate for. In fact, I think that's kind of weird to do. But if I had to...

I would consider a 911 more of a chick car than a 928; even more so in Cabriolet version.

Or maybe I should say that I'd consider a 928 more masculine than a 911.

Oh well, what do I know...?

You might be surprised at how many MSU grads live in Ann Arbor!

I agree - here at least I've gotten nothing but compliments. Of course Ann Arbor is a bit more liberal and has a highter percentage of imports than probably anywhere else in the state (just my guess - no facts to back it up). I have some friends who live in Canton, and when you drive down the street they live on there are NO imports in ANY driveway.

Bill-
I consider you my friend, but alas i have not had you over to my house in Canton which has a Honda CR-V and Porsche 928 in the driveway. There are many imports in Canton, but I'll give you that maybe upto 80% of Canton is employed by Ford and thus have Ford cars in the driveway.

Sorry Andrew - I didn't mean to imply that ALL of Canton is import-free. I'll bet the IKEA parking lot is full of them.

The subdivision I live in is almost import free, I know of a couple Toyotas, a Saab and an older M3, and that's it. My next door neigbor, shortly after I bought the car, came right over to check out my 928. Other then myself, I think he is my car's biggest fan. I have a lot of friends with muscle cars (ie. 1968 Camaro, 1972 Chevelle, 1971 Charger), and they are the main ones that have given me grief.

I mainly get grief from one of my best buds, who owns a White C-5 Vette. I hang out with the Corvette club here in town every once in a while, and since I got a V-8, they don't mind much I guess. LOL. But, they are starting to come around. Poking under the hood, kicking the tires, slowly realizing that the layout of our cars is very similar, even though mine is much older.

...The car has been even called "a chic car"...
Tell them that 98 percent of 928 purchasers were men. I have this good natured banter with a coworker who drives a BMW Z3. Now there's a chic car!
