How can I tell if my motor mounts are shot?
If you can stick your pinky between the motor mount "hook" they are ready for replacement. It isn't critical to replace them right away.

I'll bet you couldn't tell if the new mounts in a 928 are Anchor hyd. ones or the Porsche ones when driving. Does anyone know who produces the mounts for Porsche?

I also use Zimmerman rotors

I've heard rumors that there may actually be individuals out there who are sucessfully using non-928 and non-Porsche parts like cranks, or rods, or pistons, or rings, or cams, or valves, or valve springs, or intakes, or engine management, or fuel injectors, or fuel pressure regulators, or springs, or shocks, or sway bars, or wheels, or clutches, or flywheels, or exhaust manifolds, or exhaust pipes, or brake rotors, or brake pads, or seats, or heater valves, or air filters, or air intake tubes, or radiators, or stereos, or speakers, or shift *****...

I'm using BMW (Bosch) coils at a 30% discount over the Porsche version (also Bosch). Go figure.

I, too, have heard of people saying their new mounts leaked or collapsed. My 89's original mounts were still supporting the motor after 13 years, although they were not 100%. I had a pan gasket leak, and replaced the mounts with the Porsche part, as a WYAIT job. That was 4 years and 80K miles ago. I was under the car last night, and the mounts look new and are still at original height - I can't get a finger between the hooks. I'm satisfied I did the right thing.

Okay, I think I have this straight:

-Roger endorses the use of non-sloshing solid mounts, preferably Corteco, if only because you know what you're getting

-Jim Bailey endorses the use of Porsche equipment hydraulic mounts (not known whether they slosh)

-Ryan Perrella endorses the use of any Anchor mount, hydraulic or solid

-Dr. Bob endorses the use of not only Porsche equipment, but aftermarket (unspecified producer, but assumed to be both Anchor and Corteco) hydraulic (sloshing) mounts.

-Carl @ 928 Motorsports endorses the use of aftermarket (unspecified producer) solid mounts, but that slosh!

-Bill B. is happy with Porsche spec mounts

Well, it certainly seems that the one common denominator in all of this is that all of the options will work given good mounts. Certainly the solid mount (non-sloshing) will not fail due to collapse, and seems to have the leg up for that reason.

Whether the non-sloshing solid mount is as smooth as hydraulic (sloshing or otherwise) mounts from Porsche or the aftermarket is open for debate. Whether the Anchor & Corteco hydraulic (sloshing or otherwise) will have an equivalent or better service life over the Porsche units is also open for debate, but Heinrich seems to the Anchor benchmark at six years of successful service (unkown whether he installed sloshing or non-sloshing hydraulic or solid).

So, everything works, only some are wickedly inexpensive, and others not so much so.

In conclusion, Docmirror said it best, "what a waste of electrons over an $18 part that works!"

Hi Bill,
"I can't get a finger between the hooks. I'm satisfied I did the right thing."
IIRC its the other way round - if you can't get your finger in they have collapsed.
Still its late and the Merlot tastes really good.

Thanks for the cliffnotes editing on this thread

edit, I support the anchor hydraulic mounts, and would suggest them over the solid/non hydraulic mounts.

I wish I could get away with the $18 part. I had no choice, though my mounts cost half what the later mounts cost.
