Default OB CV Joint Boot Repair

Well, using Sharkskins write up I started the cv joint rebuild today. Man, I never guessed it would be such a messy job. I must have gotten grease everywhere. The old stuff (27years) was so chunky I had to let the parts soak in gas before it would begin to break down. I got one side off. One cv bearing/joint came off with no trouble. The other one would not budge even with a puller. I just rebuilt it in place. Everything cleaned up well and there really was very little wear on the ***** and sockets. I used Dave A. as an example and cleaned everything within an inch if its life. So I get ready to put things back together and realize, there are no gaskets in the kit! Man, i could kick myself. Good thing I can do without the car for a few days but it is my dayly driver. So, I look at 928 Spec site and it clearly states that you need the gaskets. The problem is, i just called. I got to talking to Jeannie and forgot the gaskets Well, i just looked and they seem to be $6.00 each! Can that be right? Man, 2 per joint, that is $24.00 per axle. Gosh, that seems high for such miniscule gaskets. Does this sound right to you guys?

Cheers,

Frank, what gaskets are you referring to?? Are the only needed for pre 85 928's?

I'm asking because my kits should be here tomorrow for my 86.5. Will I need "gaskets"?

Yep, it's a filthy job alright. I probably should have taken a pic of the mound of paper towels that ended up completely slimed in grease. I had to bag them up and take them to the monthly hazardous waste-collection gig.

I don't remember what I paid for the gaskets, but here's a pic from my writeup, Darien:

Darren,
There is a gasket that goes between the flange the boot attaches to and the actual cv joint. Then there is one between the joint and the flange on the car. Since mine bolts up at both ends, I need 4 per axle. Dave, I was able to get the boots from the kit to work. I had to stretch them quite a bit but it worked.

Good luck Darren, prepare for a messy job. I even got grease on the door **** going between the house an garauge. Also, due to cleaning, it took much longer than I thought. One other thing and dave mentioned it in his writeup. Those damn flange bolts were tight. I only had a 3/8 ratchet that would fit the size. I had to use it with a 23m wrench and pull with all my strength to get them out. My sholders are sore this morning.

A quick PET check confirms what I recalled. There are six needed for the rear, three per side. I forget where I saw this (FWSM?) but also recall using two on the inner joints and one on the outers. There was no gasket between the U-joint and axle stub.

Glen, as Frank mentions, 4 are needed on cars which do not have the welded joint.

Glen,
Since the OB's bolt at both ends, the gaskets are required on both. Dave, I ordered them from Jeannie this morning. $48.00. That adds up to $200.00 to do this job. I let a set of good ones pass on ebay that went for $100.00 plus shipping for both. Well, they probably would have need to be rebuilt also.

Thanks,
Frank

Those flange bolts get something like 60 lbs/ft of torque. So the little 8" ratchet that comes in the pocket 3/8-drive socket set isn't going to be enough. I personally know several folks who have suffered self-inflicted road rage when the under-tightened bolts decided to come loose and stranded them. Borrow a good torque wrench if you don't have one.

Ohhh. Fun job. I rebuilt my axles and CV-joints 3-4 years ago. I dont remeber spending 200 bucks though for parts. I had 4 Genuine Porsche boot kits and 4 gaskets and it came to a bit over 100 bucks. I also bought circlip pliers and and a band clamp tool from the local Advance.

+1 on the torque wrench. My biggest problem joint was the driver/wheel side. The exhaust was in the way.

After i rebuilt them i put them in on opposite sides to get the wear going the other way. You can do that with the OB's since the axles are symmetrical side to side and end to end.

Thanks for the info John. I may do the same thing. I bought the kits because i thought they had everything you needed. That is, i 'assumed' it had everything. Well it took another 4 hours today but I got the drivers side off, everything cleaned and polished and ready to go back together as soon as the gaskets get here. I can't wait to be done with this job

The job goes much easier once you get everything clean. Problem is, the grease just seems to jump out in all directions, getting on everything in sight.

I haven't called 928 Spec yet, but it looks like only 77-85 need those extra gaskets??

Be sure and check your wheel bearings also, I had not planned on doing this and one of mine was making noise, so I am waiting on parts this am.
