Default 928s on the Autobahn

First, a big thank-you to Carl of 928 Motorsports for this event. We left Monday about 6:00 PM EDT after work and arrived about 10:45 Central Time. I hadn’t eaten all day so I looked on the GPS - El Famous Burrito on W Jefferson St. (US 52) was about a mile from the hotel; great place. I had a pork torta, 2 tamales and rice water; along with the chips and salsa, they brought a small bowl of pickled carrots and jalapenos, yum. We got to the hotel just after midnight local time and went straight to bed.

Tuesday I filled the tank at Shell by the hotel and drove the 6 or so miles to the track at Autobahn Country Club. The track was divided into north and south and we ran on the north track. We went through tech then attended the morning meeting. Since no one, including the instructors, had been on this new track it was suggested instructors drive the track with a student and also have students follow to get a feel for the track. I was fortunate to have Mark Anderson drive my car with me in the passenger seat. Not many, then it seemed no students were out on the track following the instructors so Mark kept picking up the pace driving behind Randy Faunce. Mark commented the shifter linkage was a little loose laterally so that is now on the to do list for correction. I was also fortunate to get Carl to ride with me twice as an instructor. The track time was incredible, in the afternoon I ended up being the only car on the track because Carl was giving the afternoon lecture on finding the right line between 2 and 3 and I space it, sorry Carl. I only came in because after more an hour of driving the brakes were overheating. There was plentiful track time for everyone.

My catch cans that I thought were so wonderful; are, for the street. On the track they are useless; the catch cans were dry as a bone because the oil blew out the filter on top. And no don’t suggest Murph’s set up because it doesn’t yet work for track use in its current configuration. My SC belt was oil soaked but it didn’t slip at all, the car was making close to 10 pounds of boost. I think the boost went from about 7 to about 10 because of replacing the rubber injector boots with the aluminum cups. The fortified drop links worked great and the car was very neutral.

Again thanks to Carl, Austin, the two Connies, all the instructors, corner workers and all the others who made this such a wonderful event. It was also great to see old friends and make new ones. I wasn’t able to make it for Monday’s events but Tuesday track day was the bomb.

I think a good time was had by all and more track time than you could ask for. One person told me he went though a full tank just on the track.
I had the great opportunity to drive 10+ different 928's and what a treat that was. Carl and Connie really did a great job on putting together there first 928 event.

I think it was a greater treat for us for you to drive our cars; you set a driving standard I won't/can't reach but it is nice to have a better understanding of the car's capabilities. Thanks again Mark.

Thank you for the kind words, Rick. The 2 Connies and I have been busy unpacking and answering messages all day today.... sorry I have not posted sooner.

I am waiting for the photos to become available from Robb Quinn the Photographer we hired for the event, then I will make a more formal post about the event.

Yep - "track time for everybody" could have been the slogan here... I went thru a tank of gas, Phil went thru a tank of gas, added more, and we ran that one out of fuel late in the afternoon when I was driving it. Tons of fun, and a great student/instructor ratio.

Rick - we are ALL sorting out oil separation/crankcase ventilation under boost at the track. Tim overflowed his system, you overflowed yours, and I puffed blue with my new motor all day. As the piston rings get seated this is getting better... but still.... it aint right.

Street driving is sooooo different, and many of us have had solutions that appeared to work on the street that have been shown not to be robust enough at the track. Its OK. We'll get it yet.

It was our pleasure to meet you and have your car at the track.

Wow, what a great time!!
The 928 Motorsports team did a fantastic job setting up this event.
It was a great opportunity for everyone who attended to get tons of track time with some great instructors. It was amazing watching the novice drivers (myself included) improve with each lap as the day went on. I would have a hard time believing you could attend a better "driving school" than what was provided to us all. I was feeling very proud of myself with respect to how I was able to improve throughout the day by making the mistakes and then listening to the instructors on the "right way" to do it. Just awesome fun.

I had some teething problems with my crank breather system but that didn't slow me down at all from having a full day of driving excitement.
I also burned a full tank of gas on the track.

Thanks again to 928 Motorsports for all your hard work putting this event together.

The beginning is always so rewarding because you can make so much progress in a short period of time. I think you told me it was your second day on the track so at the end of this day you just doubled your track time. Keep it up and keep having fun with all that HP.

My guess is there are some Corvette killers on this thread.

Hi,

I could not agree more with all of the above! A wonderful event that went very smooth. Probably the most fun I have had in the 4 or 5 track days at the ACC this year. This can be attributed to the GREAT people at the event. All of the beginners were great...sooo much fun to see a student "Get it". Very safe...more track time than your inner ear can handle...and lots of fun people. If you missed this, get out your Rosary and pray Carl does it again! Thanks again to Carl and all of the other guys that I pointed by...thanks for not stoning the '44 guy!
