Does anyone know the cost factors and work involved to convert 85 Euro to LSD?

Used LSD from 928intl costs under $1000 if they have them on hand. Other than that gearbox needs to come down and will require adjustment of shims. It would be stupid not to change bearings and seals at same time. Cost of installation depends totally on who does it. Between DIY and most expensive shop in town, difference is probably $1000.

 

I don't think the gearbox needs to come out. Measure backlash before removing the open diff, transfer ring gear to LSD unit and replace restoring the same backlash.

 

It doesn't have to come down totally but I think its impossible to change diff without lowering it some. '78 My might be expection as battery box can be taken aout of the way on those.

Ok so parts $1000 than whatever installation cost? How much time and work involved? Are we talking weekend project?

Sorry, I was replying the the post 2 up from there, regarding whether this is a weekend job. Sterling Gee shows the steps. It is not too involved. So, yes, weekend job....the main issue will be whether you have enough of the various shim thickesses to get the diff to the correct preload and backlash. If not, you will have to stop and order some more. Some have commented that often the diff takes the same shims as you had in there before, since the major variable is housing dimensions and not the diff itself.

Which gearbox do you have G28/?? I have an LSD w/ 2.75 in a complete gearbox, which I would consider parting with the rear-end section. The LSD is really tight, and feels more than 40% but who knows. Also I have new dual cap distributor for the 84/85 euro's that needs a new home (box is collecting dust).

If anyone can help determine if a G28/05/08 rear end will mate clean, it would be helpful.

 

When 928 Intl has them, they have sold them for that or less. Last one I bought from them, currently on my garage floor, was about $1K shipped. These are USED, of course, but in very good shape.

 

So how can I find out what ratio my "89 S4 is?

if all else fails (and i know this procedure sucks), but you can always count the ratio of turns between the ring gear and the pinion gear to get the gear ratio.
