Which is faster? 951 or 928?

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Louie Ott's car:
https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/294765-a-new-monster-in-the-pnw-congrats-louie.html
Flattest torque curve I've ever seen, and 570+ hp without boost.
I'm impressed by anyone who puts the effort into finding that kind of hp. And that includes doing it with a 2.5L 8V engine. I'd probably love a ride in either car. But for me 320hp is just fine. At least until I can 'tweak' my Audi S4.

The sick part is that I just got my new turbo in the mail yesterday - blows another 10 pounds of air, we hope it will keep spoolup within 100 RPM on the datalogger. Some of you guys know what this means.

This thread reminds me of the last time someone gave me a piece of vegetarian pizza...I had to go out and eat 2 lbs of Jimmy Dean sausage to compensate....therefore, last evening, I took by the 968 (951 wannabee) and the 928 out for a "to the wall" drive. In the 928 you are really going a lot faster than it feels. They are two entirely different feeling cars. Both very fast when you punch the heck out of them. And they "feel" different in the corners. But, I still prefer the 928....it feels better, sounds better, and (at least) makes me think that it's going faster althoug when you keep the 968 between 5,000 and 6,000 rpm it's a screamer. Both are great cars and I'm suspect Lart's rig is a great running car (and it doesn't sound like he's afraid to take it to the edge!). I suspect that, on the track, I might even prefer the cornering of the 968 (a la 951) but for general "everything else..but not excluding the track) the 928 rules in my mind. They really are two great cars...and both with different driving characteristics. I don't consider either a 1/4 mile car although they may be perform pretty well. When you look at the figures, the 951 is no slouch though.
I like Heinrich's analogy of Blondes vs. Redheaded women. Which are more beautiful? Depends?
I started this thread wondering if I wanted to put a forced air kit on my 928, on the 968, or just buy a 951. Given the expense and relative difficulty of modifying the 968, that's out for me. The other two are still on the burner since one can dang near buy a 951 play car for what it would cost to modify the 928....but then again....it wouldn't be an 928. Do they still make Jolt Cola? I could use a jump start.
Harvey
I'll hand it to him, Lart has lots of passion for Porsches...and has a sense of humor. If his car runs like he says, there's a whole spool full of whoop-a$$ under the hood. I think it would be a kick going for a ride with him.

What dyno is being used here? I am assuming these numbers are at the crank??not the wheels! What drivetrain loss is used? What is this 0 hp and torque at 2700 rpms about?
I have to admit the hp number is impressive even the torque curve out of a 4 banger is astonishing but the curve is very short and hate to say not very useable on the street. With max torque and Hp covering less than 1500 rpms and torque droping immediately after it peaks. You must have to be constatntly shifting otherwise your screwed. Lag must be tremendous even compared to my 94 and although the car must be lightning fast once everything comes together but unless conditions are ideal you would have to fight really hard to beat a 997TT and you better have the road to make it work otherwise a stock GTS will beat you under off off power low RPM conditions. I don't know what kind of 1/4 mile times you are running but I doubt the time is as fast as the speed. With the lag I see in those charts I would say you are running about a 13 seconds 1/4 but trap speed must be up there about 135 mph.
Based on these charts my basicly stock 94 964 turbo with simple bolt on mods should be far faster and I would have to work much less, although even though I am running a 3.6 second 50-75mph time you might just have me there if you are in your power band. I am at almost full torque at 3200 rpms and it is a gradual build all the way up to peak torque at 5500 rpms where i achieve max HP. I have had some run ins with some powerful cars and it all depends on who is faster at the draw but in the case of this power curve you better be right there to beat the likes of a 997TT that has power almost all the time with a very flat toruqe and power curve. Your car would prove to be fast but unless you are racing at a wide open track this kind of power curve is not very useable.
With all that said the 911 turbo is still faster.
Did I just say that? ![ooops](https://rennlist.com/forums/graemlins/icon501.gif)

I've heard estimates of 1200-1300hp, but I'm not sure anyone really knows.

I think those are rear wheel numbers, also ST is using a LSD S2 tranny.

LSD S2 tranny I guess can handle that kind of power but from what I see when I look at mine I doubt it. The axles are definately not strong enough either. He better be running a Guard LSD because I have seen stock LSD's get toasted easily and I am assuming he is running some serious suspension upgrades. I have a 968 M030 suspension in my S2 and it is too soft for stock power never mind all the power we are talking here I am assuming we are talking about 550 BHP if those are rear wheel numbers. That is the most I have ever heard of a 951 making and the others that came close were not 2.5l motors.

I appologize by saying larts dyno chart I ment ST's
Even ST's new chart still holds to what I was saying. Very peaky power curve with 0 low end power. IMO Tim's car wins hands down and it is not just for peak numbers.

This gives you 1500 rpm of pure power which we all know lasts a very short time before needing to shift, with very little power down below. IMO this makes for bragging rights but not very useable on the street and makes for a very slow off the line start. Although it will do a number on many cars once you hit 4500 rpms I am sure ST must be quite exhausted after driving public roads for any period of time.
As shown by links to drag race cars and others you can make any car a high HP car. Making one that can accelerate like a demon and still retain the comfort, feel and handling of what a Porsche is meant to be is another story. I for one would rather have a lower powered car with a perfectly set up suspension than a peaky monster. But that is me.
I can make my car pump out 1000 hp and unless it is used on the track it would have no purpose or reason for being on the street. I know someone who has taken a nice factory slant nose 930 dropped a 94 3.6 turbo engine and converted it to EFI, twin turbo with all the goodies. the thing is a monster and I am sure will dust all cars posted in this thread. It is the most uncomfortable useless street car I had ever driven and most of the time you have to refrain from using the power because the 335 18" tires can't keep traction.
Whatever floats your boat but numbers don't impress me driving skill and handling says much more. Most of us can't tap into the power of stock Porsches never mind high HP cars like ST's.

What kind of race? A drag race a race at Lime Rock Park a race down the Taconic. What will it prove who is fastest, OH BOY.
I agreed the car is fast but what fun is it to drive. Like having a woman with a perfect body no brain and no knowledge how to use what she has. Useless!!
What you seem to miss is, I like the 944/951 I own one myself but just being fast is only a small part of the equation. The 944/951 has many attributes and to me overpowering a car like the 944 is a waste unless you need to prove to the world you are faster which is something I grew out of when I turned 20.
