A pleasant surprise a few years ago... my old continental orange find when i went to check out a "red" 78 928 about 50 miles from home:

These cars are supposed to sit in a Californian desert. Why hasn't anyone taken on the cars for renovation?

Because a complete restoration is a $60,000 proposition, if your labor cost is zero, and the cars in that picture are perhaps worth $60,000 if they were 10K mile survivors in perfect condition. The number of restoration shops doing it purely for the love is small.

Rob, I've seen so many talented men here on Rennlist who can most likely restore a 928 on their own. A very suitable job during dark cold winter evenings. Well, you in California have summer all year round.
