Default 91 GT - "knocking sound" from PSD

It happens every time the PSD gets activated: A clear "tock, tock, tock" sound from the PSD unit. It starts off with maybe 2 or 3 "tock’s" pr second, then the frequency increases to maybe 4-6 while it fades away. The whole thing lasts for about 5 seconds. The PSD seems to work just fine.

It has been like this since I bought the car one year ago, but now it also happens every time I turn on the ignition (it did not do that before)

I know about the flushing procedure, but I haven’t tried that yet. I have checked the reservoir, and it has normal level.

Just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced the same or if anyone has any views (could it be air bubbles?)

Thanks for any inputs!

Never had any ticking sound come from mine. Upon startup the pump will build pressure in the accumulator. If there is air in the system, it maybe hard for the system to build pressure. But if that is the case, you would only hear the pump which should be relatively quiet.

The noise you describe could be a solenoid going bad, or the pump going bad. I would flush the system in any event. During your flush you will have a very good opportunity to isolate the noise and determine where it's coming from.

Thanks a lot.

IF it is a bad solenoid, is that fixable/changable?

Why not flush it first, then worry about it if it persists?

Thanks for all input.

I tried to empty the reservoir (as suggested by borland) by turning the ignition on and off. After a few times I heard the sound of what I believe is the pump kicking in for about 5-10 seconds. So it seems like it working as it should...

As the "tock-tock" sound is not coming from the pump, is it any other moving parts than the solenoid likely to produce this sound?

Could it be an electrical issue causing the solenoid to act funny (i.e. not a problem with the solenoid itself) ?

My GT makes the same sound, I have flushed PSD but no changes. I have driven it like that for 2 years.

fredis GT: when you say that your GT has had the same behaviour for 2 years, do you mean the "tock-tock" knock-sound or the pump sound?

It's "tock-tock" sound as you described.
