I am not in the oil industry, but I would think a comparable substitue would be something like the Shell Rotella(?) line of oil.

Talked with Mobil.
They are producing the 15W-50 and have no plans on stopping.
Very low production as volume from distribution is low.
Conclusion - does not sell well so people are not stocking it.
Can be special ordered.
They have put me in direct contact with the local distributor to buy direct.
They also suggested www.avlube.com

I would still like an alternative though.

Roger,
Do you mean 15W-50 or are you mistaking it for Doug's recommended 5W-40? I've always Googled it and ordered the 5W-40 recommended by Doug on line.

I know it's a crazy idea Roger, but have you tried other retailers? Venture outside your comfort zone. There's a whole 'nother world out there besides Wal-Mart.

M1 15W-50 seems to be drying up all over. I'm trusting it is a temporary supply issue. I need the 50 for high-temp, high-speed open road racing. I'd run a 10W-50 oil if I could find one, but nothing lower.

Ernie,
5W 40 may be OK for those low powered GT stick shift thingy cars but my pure bred autos need 15W 50.
I resolved it locally via the distributor.

Bill - Call Mobil Tech line for your area and ask for the local distributor.
You can buy it direct then.

Excellent, although the price is not.

If it's available to you and me from the distributor, outside of Wal Mart, who appears to have just decided not to sell it any more, why is it missing from other retailers as well? I'll talk to me local independent parts house and see if they are having any trouble getting it.

Thanks Doug ! one again you have proven that Porsche knew what they were doing with the recommended oil change miles. If I were closer I would have asked for your "used" oil to run in my BMW Take care my friend and you do need to drive your 928 more !

WELL YES

They have outpriced the demand for their product. I switched to Delvac months ago. 6 bucks a quart and 7 is too much. Period.

I see Delvac in various stores, but I see several oils under that label and can't quite figure which is the right one. Maybe I need to take my glasses in and read the fine print. Plus I need 50 for the hot viscosity.

Ok, you guys are really making me think about the oil used in the Holbert machine. probably would be good to get it looked at by the lab now that i have 3 race weekends on it.
how much do you send to the lab?
what do you send it in?
and again, what is the lab website or address?

I think it would be interesting to see how the amzoil stacks up after a beating on the track.

thanks,

Mark

20-50 seems a little thick on the cold end. You may be running on bypass for quite a while after cold start-up. And doesn't Amsoil tend to thicken over time? Maybe great for racing and frequent oil changes, but I'm happy with M1 15-50 for longterm street use with annual oil changes.

Mark, Blackstone Labs will send you a free kit for the oil sample, then you just send it back to them via regular mail. Very simple to do, and they will e-mail the results to you quite quickly. Also, they will then send you some more sample kits for free. Here's the link:

Blackstone Labs

Give it a try and post the results for us!
