Darien,

That is really confusing looking. How does the woodruff key look and is it even present? If it is missing/offset/bent(?), that could explain the difference between the tool and your gear/cam. If the cam gears line up and the cam is that far off something is amiss. Could the gear be on without the key being present?(sorry if you already looked). I used the dial indicator factory method and referenced Porken's cam tool to that and the tool was within 1 degree on one side and .5 degrees on the other on my car and with my backyard mechanic wrenching skills. Others have had similar results, so something is off there.

Also, it looks like your belt has done some recent foward wandering looking at the wear marks on the gears.

If you want to borrow another cam timing indicator to check the results before pulling the cam covers , let me know and I'll ship it to you.

My theory, my beautiful theory...

Anyhu, ignore my 'retarded' postulations above. No need to mess with the belt. Just follow the instructions for retarding the cam, IE turn the engine until the tool shows 0°, put in the spacer, hold the cam, and turn the crank until T|0, etc.

Then see how she runs.

Jim,

Thanks for the offer. As for the belt, when we installed it last year it looked the same; I took pictures for good measure.

Ken,

Your theory was sounding good too I didn't get a chance to work it today, I'll keep you posted

Funny you ask, Bill came over today and we got the driver side zero'd in

I dorked up a distributor cap tonight, so I'll have to wait to fire it up

Here's the before and after pics, can't wait to see how she runs.

Isn't that Tbelt a bit close to the edge of the cam gear? Certainly isn't centered. How would one get the belt centered if everything but the gears had been replaced? But the gears still look to be in great shape? Are looks deceiving?

But did you simply adjust the cam gear? Or did you have to re-string the belt?

I heard that each t-belt finds it's own groove. The belt has always stayed in that position.

No, just had to loosen the big cam bolts and adjust. Having the WSM procedure fresh in my mind from just doing my own motor with the dial indicator method, this tool is actually quite genius! The use of that tiny spacer/washer behind the cam bolt when you have to adjust CW is spot on - never thought of that. You'd normally have to grab the camshaft with a wrench to make that movement.

PorKen, brilliant job on the design!

(and thank you too Andy)

Darien,

did you feel any difference in how the engine now performs?

Glad to hear things lined up. I'll be calling you guys when i go to do mine!

Be sure to report back when you get your cap and have it running. You may also want to repeat that compression test to verify things are back to

I think that's a great idea! I'd be curious to see the effects (if any) on your compression gauge.

Thumbs up UPDATE!!

Preliminary results are GREAT The engine has a quicker throttle response, and the power band seems to stay strong. I'll do another compression test, but I think a trip to the dyno is in order

Thanks Andrew, for the loaner PorKen/ Tony and Bill for the help and moral support/ and Ken for designing an awesome tool (simple, fast, and great results)

That's great news! Feel free to hand the tool over to Tony if he's interested, otherwise, just send it back when it's convenient for you.
