Bad shocks - What would you do?

Bill, wish I was closer so I could help, as I now have my own recent experience replacing shocks and springs. I adjusted my new Koni's to 3 one-half turns (clockwise) from softest. On the interstate and nicely paved back roads, the ride is firm, but not rock hard. It doesn't wallow like an old Caddy when the road transitions at overpasses, etc. On expansion joints or small pavement patches, the ride is a bit rough. I'll see how I like it and may make adjustments.

Rich: According to Koni, the standard valving is custom for the 928 and when they are converted to external there is no change in valving. Therefore, if George's work, mine should.

Well, more unhappiness. The Koni replacements arrived today. I'm trying to set up the shocks with moderately high rebound dampening. Fronts, no problem. Left them 1/2 turn shy of full hard with 7 seconds free rebound time. Both were nine seconds at 1/4 turn. On the rears, it's a different story....one side rebounds MUCH faster than the other side. This is off the car, doing initial setup. Plenty of pumps up and down, so this is not from sitting on their side in the box. Guess I'll call Koni back again tomorrow.

My vote would be for the Bilsteins...they have been secretly tested in sweepers at 140+ by someone that looks like me...
When shuttling a '91 GT up north after SITM that had Koni/Eibach we would say "Who wants the Caddy?" after getting gas.

Bill, I can't say for sure but I believe they need lubrication as well as "wearing in". When shocks sit a while on a shelf I *imagine* they could lose seal a bit. Again, just a thought.

Bill- I have an 85 S with the internally adjustable Konis and an 87 S4 with Bilstein Club Sports with Eibach progressive springs, DEVEK H.D. front bar. The Konis are O.K. for street use, very bad on rebound damping at high speeds. The 87 with the coil over set up is used for many track days, 145 mph max straight speeds on the tracks that we run, but solid as a rock. The car has been lowered as well, this combo gives excellent high speed stability with great connering and transitional handling. The Bilsteins can be re-valved for more stiffness if desired, as they are, they are perfect , the car regularly outruns many dedicated race cars on the track.

Bill- Just talked with another Koni user from our race shop. They stopped using Konis due to their short life span. They are all using Bilstein for off the shelf applications and Carreras for custom applications. The Konis would quit usually before the season was over, often at very inopportune times.

I would email them this thread... if this thread would have popped up a few months ago I would be trying to find time to install Bilsteins as opposed to the Koni's I bought.

Bill, what springs are you using? How old are they? My GT was as you described before changing to KONI/Eibach. And I love to use GT on race track, now it's like it should be.
