FWIW, I have bilsteins on the back and the internally adjustable konis on the front and weltmiester progressive springs which are very similar to eibachs. I was going to put on bilsteins in the front but I drove a friends car who has progressive springs and bilsteins and I felt like his front end floated. Might be that the shocks are worn out but they don't have all that many miles on them but his car didn't handle nearly as well as mine. Did I mention one of my rear bilsteins with only 5,000 miles is leaking?
It's always felt to me like all four were bad. The front hit on bumps which never bottomed it before. The rears have always been under-damped based on the bounce test. I'll send them in for "repair" after checking the numbers to make sure I didn't get 944 shocks.

Bill, I know we chatted about this months ago .... and being a satisfied Koni user, I would again repeat the comment that the warranty should be exercised.
There is no driving condition that I could conceive of that would bottom out my Konis .... perhaps I need to drive harder ...

Garth:

Yes, it looks like exercising the warranty is recommended all around. And I still can't believe how bad these shocks have been and how much worse they got in the last year. We have a ride route at Sharks in the Park that is pretty twisty and has some high speed bumps as well - a real good suspension test. I do beat the car pretty hard on the ride. I have heard others with Koni externals complain that it bottomed their cars even after they adjusted them hard. It showed me immediately how bad the new shocks were. Then, trying to cruise down a narrow, crowned, two-lane desert road at 150-170 MPH yesterday revealed just how much worse the shocks had gotten since last year. Below 100 you would think things were fine. I drive this car 80 miles to work and back each day and had no appreication how bad it was until the speed runs yesterday.

I'll fix them and maybe try to find some loaners while they are gone and give them one more chance as I'm not convinced anything short of Motons or Penske are really better. I do want to nail down whether George's or Tim Dey's Konis were custom valved or not before I send them in.

Bill,
Can you negotiate an exchange for new under warranty? Somewhere I maybe heard that's how their rebuild program works anyway. Maybe a different company. Just an idea.

Bill, i was thinking the same as sub, about you having the wrong shocks for your car, plus if koni gives you any gripe about your problems you have a historic ledger here on rennlist for them to check out...and that alone should garner you some specialy fast help....too many 928ers looking the treads to mess up with the good koni name to chance anythig but the best customer service.
BTW. changed over to hypercoils ad konis...LOVE THEM!!!! but alas only go to drive them on my fovorite twistys twice befor something (not susp) went amiss (bad flex plate we think) ..
Anyway send them back...ask for replacements!!! shocks are cheep compared to all the good press they would get.

Bill, did you buy the shocks from one of the recognised 928 suppliers? If so I would believe there should be no issue with replacements...............as previously stated that's where I'd be headed.

Now its just a matter of which replacement............I wish I had all brands to fit and evaluate on 'my test track' but alas.

Perhaps your choice should be based on your driving; sounds as if you get on it real good more than most which, if I was you, would steer me in a full performance mode.

I just looked at the Koni warranty - they will do advance replacement at the owner's discretion. Good.

Don't know if this is an option for our cars. Might be worth a look into.

Bill,

I love my setup.. all factory Porsche.. I have the S4/GT/GTS Springs and Boge Reds. If you want a stiffer ride, go CS setup which is the Orange mark springs with the Boge Reds. And yes, change your springs while you are at it... you will be amazed at the difference. For extra, you can always increase the anti roll bar gauge to reduce roll

Sincerely,

Jim:

Ohlins would be nice. They are premium shocks, big in motorcycle area. Digging around that link doesn't show applications, although the do have a P-car image on one page. There is hope. There are a bunch of US service centers that list autos among their vehicles.
http://www.damper.se/ÖhlinsUSA/Servi...6/Default.aspx

Here's a site that offers Ohlins. Only shows 2 models of P-car..

Sincerely,
I rather liked my factory red Boges around the twisties, athough they were loose at very high speed, so I replaced them. I can't find the paint marks on the springs, despite the factory sport suspension option code.

Bill, for what your doing with your car, it is time you step up to a real shock! Yes, they are a ton more expensive, but whats your life worth?

Call Affco and tell them what you want. They can custom make a shock for you. At least they used to do it for us ($$$).
http://www.afcoracing.com/afco_ct.html

Give blistein a call and see what they can do for you. If your willing to pay the extra dollar, they too would make up a set for you.

Landrum is one of the coil and leaf spring companies we have used. They can and will make any spring you want.

P.S. No there is not an application guide! You will need to either be able to fabricate/mod your shock mounts or know someone that can (928 Int or DEVEK).

I sent mine to True Choice and they were not repaired; they sent a brand new pair. I thought that one front was bad and sent both in.

If you've got the receipt, bought them originally and used them on one car, then you're good. For "replace in advance" they'll charge you for new ones at list price and then rebated that if the old ones are bad.

I'm a happy Koni customer. Running the old fashioned set-up with the old (original type) Eibachs in front and then the old fronts on the rear. Shocks set to 3/4 hard. Really handles well and predictably. They are harsh on bad roads.
