Default A few more S4 powder coating pics.

Just got my parts back from a local powder coater. Very good job with a very good price. He did all seven parts for $124.00 He even pre-heated the parts to 400 for around 30-40 minutes for me like I asked in order to "out-gas" the alloy. The color is called "silver vein" and almost looks like black chrome with silver "lightning bolts" running all through it. It is a textured finish. Pictures do not do it justice.

I lilke this! And the natural unevenness of this finish might make any imperfections in the castings less obvious...

Wow! I agree with Nicole on the texture. Very, very nice, did they media blast it or did you strip it first?

I chose the textured finish because my parts had some "rough" spots from the casting process after all the factory coating was removed. My trip to the bead blaster returned one part (manifold) partially stripped. His bead blaster was not removing the factory finish very well. He didn't charge me anything, so I scooped up my parts and was on my way to home depot for some paint stripper and brushes. I used a putty knife, pick, wire wheel, small flat tip, sand paper, and anything else I could get my hands on to remove the existing finish. It was very very tedious. Must have spent 6-8 hours cleaning. But when I was finished, there was nothing left. The wire wheel also left some deep scratches in places and I was afraid a smooth finish would not hide this. This coating worked like a charm, and really really looks good in person. Now I have to decide if I want to try and paint the letters red, or silver, or black, or a combination. I'm just afraid that whatever I use will not have the durablility of this stuff. I have seen a lister use caliper paint for the valve covers. He used a syringe and just squirted the paint into the recessed letters and let it spread out naturally. Roger (another lister) also clued me in to the Tester paint pins at hobby lobby. They use an enamel paint with a felt tip, and are the exact width of the letters on the manifold/cam covers.

Scrap, rub, sand, or wash out that whole intake. Mine looked like that inside as well.

Mike,

Nicole (as well as Jager, of course) offers the new Jager lettering for both the intake and the cam covers. During one of the latest 928 get-togethers over here, an owner showed off his intake with the lettering and it looked very nice. It also seemed to be holding up well to the heat.

You may want to consider that. Whatever you decide, it will probably turn out looking great. Keep on posting the pictures.

Mike,
Will she be ready for the DFW GTG on the 5th August?
If not I trust you are coming anyway.

That is too cool! I have my intake all apart, and had nixed the notion of powercoating all the intake parts since I figured it was too expensive. Wow! $124!

Care to share the name of the powdercoater? That color is fantastic too!

Mike,
That type of finish was one I was contemplating myself, when I had my top apart... One of the powder coaters I was contemplating using, showed me this stuff that was similarly described by you, and they called it a "wear surface coating", meaning it was thick and durable, I too, thought it would look quite different..... But I elected to go with a grey.......

Nice looking, nice looking work! GREAT price!

I went with the enamel paint pens from a hobby store as well, it's holding up so far, with about 6 months of driving to this point....
