Default Sticky Lifter

It first happened about 5 months ago. I started the GTS and had a nice tapping sound. I turned the engine off and statred it again and it was gone. So I thought little of it.

This past week it happened 3 more times. The last time it took 3 restarts before it would go away.

What am I in for? Is there an additive I can add to the oil or does this require something more serious to remedy. It does not happen everytime and it is not an issue if the engine is warm. It is also the same lifter each time, it is the left cylinder nearest the driver.

Any ideas?

Thanks

All 928's I have heard have some degree of tapping-clicking-even knocking when the hood is open, especially when the engine is cold (& not driven in a few days)....the injectors tick....& lifters can be noisey......to varying degrees..... There is an oil addtive that others have had some success with it.....risolene or something like that.....of course I can't remember (shocker)

Thanks,

It appears Rislone is the product or you can use Marvel mistery oil.

Wasn't sure if I should be concerned, but it would appear to be a pretty common issue.

Rislone is strong stuff. Follow the directions and don't hammer it, as the oil film will be thinner. LOL

Maybe get some auto-rx, and do a treatment. You may have an issue where the car simply is not driven enough, or wasn't in its previous life.

Alot of real people think autorx is great. It cleans very very well, but needs to be in an engine for 1500 miles.

I am not familiar with this autorx where can I pick it up?

The car just had its 13th birthday and is just shy of 60,000 miles. Records show an average of about 5000 miles a year with a little less now that I own it. Oil change frequancy was 2k miles or less. So it may not be driven enough. Although I do not baby the car and use the engine throughout the entire RPM range.

I am going to look for this rislone and autorx products see if it cures the issue.

Thanks

Bob the oil guy's website has people on thier talking about oil all the time. Many suggest the auto-rx.

That doesn't mean it cures everything, but the lifters in these cars are very robust.

First of all, let's talk basics. What brand and weight oil are you using. Are you making your engine pump 20/50 dead dinosaur oil, or is there something decent in the crankcase as a car like this deserves. Putting Rislone or Mystery Oil in??? Ferdinand is turning in his grave...no offense guys.

I use Mobil 1 15w50 in both this and the turbo. I have never had any issues with it and I change it every 2000 miles maximum or once a year which ever comes first. Last oil change was done at the bigining of the season and it has 1300 miles on it. It was also changed at the end of last season. I burn about 1 quart of oil every 1200 to 1500 miles.

Based on the frequency of oil changes in the past I don't think there should be much crud in the engine. I statred the car up yesterday and it ran perfectly. Very random occurance it appears.

Have you checked the condition/cleanliness of the ball and spring which prevent oil from draining from the head? If these are sticking open then you the oil by the lifters will gradually drain and they will tick briefly on start up.

Just a thought.

Chris,

No I did not. I will do so although it appears to be just one lifter that is making the noise. It is the closest to the driver as far as i can tell. I have a stethoscope I use that is usually pretty good at focusing on where the noise is coming from.

I will check, thanks

Anthony, I had a gorgeous auto '87 with this problem. Tried Rislone and apparently didn't resolve the issue. What did work, was driving the car daily. I'd say you should hammer the engine such as at a DE day etc, should clean out the old tubes.

Anthony, try dinosaur oil a while ... the synth is very slippery, but that may be preventing a necessary bit of friction you need to get the impurity or whatever it is, to dislodge.
