Rod,

Am I missing something, the engine size column only offers a maximum to 2800, right? So which row would be used for a 928, the smallest motor was @4500.

Stan, I was not sure about that either. I think that is for T (touring). Last year they had a different one for GT. I will look and see if I can find the spread sheet. It would appear that they take into account a lot more than HP to wieght. Very involved including how many pistons are in your calipers, etc.

My pleasure bud! Starting to get butterflies yet? I just filled out my Competition licence form for PCA, hopefully will get approved by CVR at WGI. IF I pass my physical I will be racing at Summit Point this October!!

Rod,

If the calculator allowed us to enter the information for a 944TS vs 928 vs 944, then we could see how it ended up, and whether it looked fair.

As MK said above, too often the weight of a 928 is not considered enough of a handicap. The track I am at the most, Lime Rock, is a real momentum track, so high hp will only get you so far. An early US 928 with under 250 hp that could be reduced to the right weight might be an inexpensive and FUN car to race.

a few years ago, i put on huge wheels and tires on a stock 79 that was kind of strong for its year, and ran a 2:10 at thunderhill. ( basically gutted, and only a 3" cat added and 3" pipe to the rear. nothing else!)

I think limerock is not a great track to compare performance. to much having to do with handling and driver abilities. speed touring cars are now running :57s on DOTs with sub 300hp and 2800lbs.

better comparisons would be at laguna, road america, road atlanta, and watkins Glen.

bottomline, weight is 2/3s of the factor of the CAR's potential. the other 1/3 is HP to weight. its proven time and time again in Speed GT where the tires are all the same and the drive quality is pretty tops. watch the next speed Gt race when you get a chance and watch the slightly better HP to weight cadilac

Mark,

Where do you see those stats and times at LRP?
I know us eastern drivers are bad, and slow, but JV, DL and myself have all run there with under 2800# 928s with @300hp, and none of us has broke 1:00. .57 is much more difficult to achieve. I am hoping to be there (or a bit faster) when stroked and bored at @500rwhp.

WGI is a track where hp can make a big difference in my opinion.

10-4. there's a very well prepped 968 that left tracks all over me, and I need to at least try to return the favor but like everyone else has noted, weight is a biggie. even w/my 150+hp advantage on an AX track, it's a bugger to keep up w/the lighter/lessor HP stuff. but it'll be at night, so maybe my euro/H4 lights are brighter and it'll even things out - and I'll actually apex someplace in a turn instead of collecting cones, weeds, coolers, terrorizing spectators/corner workers, etc should be a rule about penalizing better drivers too, hahaha!!

don't want to get busted for being OT - but don't forget the "unwritten" rules:

bring a barf bag and beer money for the instructor - and make sure he gets the beer money 1st.
if an instructor starts looking around for something to hang onto, you should do the same

make sure your car isn't full of empty beer cans, they are worth money and we don't want them spilling onto the parking lot or the homeless folks will get in the way trying to retrieve them (inland empire rules)

if an instructor yells, it's just cause they're having fun - don't let it bother you/treat it like your SO and put it on ignore as you do your thing.

if he starts reaching for his seat belt, that's either a good sign or bad sign - depending on which way the car is facing

if you start gathering cones during the track walk, they won't get stuck under your car later
entry fees should be refundable if enough other racers try to kill you.

putting oil on the pass seat before instructor gets in gives them the impression you are going faster than you really are, and helps wash off the puke later too...

only use the stereo in the pits, to drown out noise from other racers and officials
a black flag only applies to you if you see it

if you pull off the course, it's ok as long as you don't spill your beer
don't point to pass w/your middle finger - folks get confused and think you are just foolin
putting smoke bombs in your trunk before a run looks cool and keeps others from tailgating

use your horn whenever you see a curve and are getting ready to turn - gives others time to clear the area

don't forget to thank everyone before you leave - it's hard work dodging drivers who are trying to drive around the cones while they are being carried - but it does keep the course interesting for the drivers

I'm still learning, but I hope this helps

These are World Challenge touring cars, running the top :57 times. and they are really about 275 to 280rwhp for the bmw 2.5 liter racers. And close hp to weight for the acura and audi. The GT cars ran some 55 to 56s and the recent race there with Grand Am rolex, put the cup cars i the :55 second range.. heck thats right near TransAm times!!
anyway, those guys are the ones i run with locally here. I run with brandan davis, Nick , John prall, matt richmond, etc. they are always top 10 cars and im as fast or faster then these guys in my 928. good trade offs of a little more hp to weight and they have a MUCH more evolved platform. suspension on these cars cost more than 2x my cars worth! Motec, etc. At tracks like sears and limerock, its these kind of set ups and drivers that make the brake from a 1:00 at limerock to the :58 range. at Sears, also a very tight track, that pays dividends more for HP but big penalties for larger heavier cars, those same guys are 1-2 seconds faster than me, wth the top cars peaking at near 3 seconds faster in WC touring.

keep in mind, those bmws are 2800lbs and some at 2900lbs with rewards weight, are weighed with driver. my car is near 2950lbs after a race with me in it.

Anderson was 1:01 with 440rwhp and the Toyo T1S street tires. his biggest competition is/was near :57 at LRock on toyo RA1s. keep in mind, these same guys go to Road America, and they run 2:14.5 !!!!!!!!!!!!! vs us in the 2:30+ range. Anderson has run 2:19, but can always be in the 2:22 range for sure.

some cars fit a track better than others. so many factors, so little time. ha ha
