Antenna Question
I have an 85 Euro with the radio antenna in the windshield. I am going through a radio and speaker upgrade.
I ordered a roof antenna for a later model 928 thinking I would add it to the top for better reception. Problem is that it is a antenna w/ booster (92864520100). It has a black wire with connector that I assume connects to a booster which my car has.
I have read through many posts on radios, speakers and antennas but haven't seen an answer for this issue.
Will it still work?
Should the black wire be connected or left open?
Is there a different antenna I should use?

Are you referring to a fuba antenna? If you are then yes, the antenna has the regular thicker antenna cable with a thinner wire right next to it. I dont know if I understand you correctly, but your car has an antenna booster already? If yes, then you dont need it since the fuba has an internal booster chip in the antenna base. The thin black wire needs a switched 12v for the booster. You can connect this wire to the antenna lead on you stereo. One way to verify if you have the correct wire is to use a multimeter on the antenna lead from the radio and measure the voltage with the radio off. you should have 0. then turn on the radio and you should have 12v at the wire. There is no need for an external booster and the reception on the fuba is very good. Be careful drilling the hole for the antenna in the roof. There wass no need for me to measure for the hole since if you remove the headliner panel there are 5 "holes" on rear of the roof that the snaps holding the panel snap into. The middle one is the one you want to use to mount your antenna. Once you have the hole cut out make sure you file it and scratch away the paint on the inside to where the nut grips the roof since this is the ground point for the antenna. Good luck, and YMMV....

Disconnect the existing RF antenna booster for the windshield antenna - then connect your new antenna booster to wherever that was connected. This should be a switched supply (ignition or accessory or switched with the radio).
You may see other references to "Booster" in the car - that may refer instead to the audio amplifier - don't do anything to that for the radio antenna....

Sorry for the incorrect typing. My car does not currently have a booster on the windshield antenna. Just a cable from the radio going to a box at the base of the window passenger side behind the dash. Then a thin wire going forward to connect to the window.
It doesn't say Fuba on it anywhere but it is the orginal antenna that came on 89-95 cars. I assume that is a Fuba?

Hi that sounds like the antenna booster. Alan could you not use the BLUE wirethat comes off the new stereo that would normally be used for the antenna to extend to power the Fuba antenna booster? That is how I connected my antenna with a new head unit

The oem antenna for S4 and newer is the fuba. You said you are upgrading the stereo, right? The new head unit should have a cable listed as the antenna lead for a power antenna. It shoud be either white or blue. What it this cable does is provides power when the radio is turned on. That is the cable you want to connect to the thin wire on the fuba antenna. Then other cable is the standard antenna cable that connects to the back of the radio. You can ditch the box that you said connects to the windsheild antenna.

Yes you can use a power antenna output or probably an amplifier tirgger output from the head unit or the switched supply for the radio (R output of the ignition switch - or even just X-Bus Accessory output of ignition switch).
Yes Fuba or Hirschman is the brand name of the roof antenna only - does not apply to the windshield antenna which is generic and does not itself come with a booster - that should already be stock in the car if configured for a windshield antenna.

How's this for something different. At some point in my cars past a PO installed an antenna under the car.
It is clipped and glued and runs along the underbelly from front to rear.
Its pretty much invisible and can't be seen unless looked for. It works but I must admit its not brilliant. I'm happy to leave well enough alone though and haven't felt the need to change it.
Cable runs straight up through the floor in behind the fuse panel.

Excellent. The radio does have a blue/white wire to trigger a remote amp or antenna. Just wanted to make sure I understood the antenna side.
I really appreciate the comments.
