Really? Boardwalk Porsche over here in Dallas has been fantastic with advice. I have ahd mechanics ther just walk out and and tell me how to fix things and then the talk with the service advisor and bottom line the estimate for repair.
I really dont mech service i do everything myself......I move in to my house in may so things will be much easier.
Having another car to drive means that if something goes wrong you can take the time to fix it properly instead of rushing it or doing it half-assed just so you can get to work the next day.
Reliable ? compared to WHAT ? and lumping 1978 928s with 1995 928s makes little sense at all. You have to figure the first 100,000 miles or so when the car was nearly new were probably pretty un-eventful. Plus when the car is the daily driver repairs get made quickly as needed BECAUSE it is the daily driver. We need only look at Brendan as the poster child for unreliable 928s his S-4 has not run for YEARS I have to keep reminding myself that nearly everyone who calls me has a PROBLEM and that is why they call me ! There are many owners who have few issues so they rarely call. The old very brown 1980 has been reliable ...of course there was the broken 5 th gear, failed torque tube bearing, the blown up coil, worn out brake pads,4/5 sets of tires ,A/c which never worked ,clutch release bearing which died two weeks ago, ...... great car ! And I really do mean that great car!
My 81 started making this whistling nose on Sunday - for the life of me I cannot figure out what it is.
Bring it on over and I'm sure I can get rid of that whistling noise for you. No charge.
I'd have to say that a 928 is probably at least as reliable as any other 11-28 year old car that may have been subject to questionable maintainance, and individuals who really didn't know what they were doing getting their hands on it.
OH Yes...."individuals who really didn't know what they were doing getting their hands on it." .... I get many phone calls from shops asking questions that they REALLY should not be asking but probably is better that they do ask ,at least they realize that they do not KNOW !
I took care of this issue. I bought another one. When one is broken.....I drive the other. When neither are broken....I do the normal maintenance. When I am not working on them....then I simply choose which one to drive that day.

Exactly. In my case, I wouldn't buy any 20 year old car without having a backup. Right now I have a 10 yr old Chevy pickup for when the 928 is down for maintenance. Having only owned my 928 for a few months, I have to say, its been very reliable. Its basically my daily driver with the Chevy for really bad weather, trips to the mall, etc. -Ed

The 89 was trouble free for 45,000 miles. In October 2002, if I had simply called you up and said "I'm sending my LH, I need a rebuilt" - I would never have taken the car apart. Its that simple.
I think 928s are as reliable as how many parts you personally have replaced. Other then the LH, the 89 would have run for about 150,000 miles with no mechanical issues other then wear items. Same for my 81, sans the blowing up of two automatics in quick succession.

Hee hee, ain't that the truth! Like the very day my alternator started going south recently - I managed to hobble the car down to 928 Int'l. partially using battery power (eh, battery was fairly new, traffic was light, I figured I could make it there and...possibly even make it back home, too!...AAA Premiere if all else fails). This, on a Friday, so I could install the part over the weekend and be ready to drive the daily driver/only car to work on Monday morning!
I was too embarrassed to tell the folks at work exactly what "personal business" I had to attend to when I blew out of there on Friday.
It's insanity, but it's the good kind. I often wonder when I will "grow up" and get a reasonable vehicle, then I think....naaah.
Oh, by the way, the car's been very reliable. Starts instantly every time, goes like stink, needs a new radiator. :-)
