Yo!
I have the common problem of shrunken, pulled-away leather from the dash vents on my 86.
I did not want to drop a bundle on the fix.
I bought a plastic dash cover. The color was wrong and the pod cover fit poorly. I deep sixed it.
I bought leather off of Ebay and tried to make a cover. The results were bad.
I used parts of the plastic dash cover to form a template/superstructure and glued my leather to that. It made the leather form the proper shape and size, but... Better, but still not good.
So:
I bought some metal grill today, cut 2 pieces 17 X 3 inches, sprayed it matte black, and put black door-edge protector around the edge to make it look finished.
It looks good. I have the original leather dash, and large metal grilles that look almost like they're supposed to be there. The area where the leather is pulled away is covered. Still some development/detail work to do, but I think it's going to work out (E.G. I want to 'black out' everything behind the grilles). No pics yet: camera's out of batteries. Perhaps pics tomorrow.

Crap pictures but it's a crap camera.
Looks better in person.
The edges are lifting up in the center. Need to glue it, but I won't, until I'm sure I want to go with this.

I have decided simple rectangles do not cut it. Too severe, and look amateurish. Do not compliment the swoopy lines of some of the interior elements. So... crescent or oval?

Nicole has trim that fits directly into the vent openings and look great from the pics I've seen. If the only cracks you have are directly near the vent opening this trim should hide it and look original.
