Default Hood Misalignment/bad hinges?

My hood is very badly misaligned. It the front closes straight (by the crest) but at the windsheild the drivers side of the hood sticks out above the fender by a 1/4". Last year when I took the hood off and looked at the hinges, the two did not seem to be mirror images of each other. In the closed position one would look different, like it was not fully closing and it wouldnt move any more. I thought before that my hood was just crooked, but after recently dropping my engine back in, the hood is really bugging me. Can anyone show pics of how their hinges are lined up on the hood on both sides? I think that this problem may be a result of the PO having the car for who knows how long with only one hood shock (pass side missing).

michaelathome's is really wonky. With dead shocks it worked fine, with good shocks you have to push down both sides by the windshield to get it to close. It's so stiff (good thing this isn't OT) that it feels like you're going to fold the hood in half.

Mine was crooked and the drivers side would always pop further out. I tried to lube the hinges and realign. Didnt work. The PO was in a passenger side collision, I never thought it would line up. So I purchased two brand new shocks, now it "pops up" before I close it. When it sits down on the lock it is out of alignment and looks bad, give a little push, it locks and now looks perfect once closed!! ???? The hood is a funny beast!

Thanks for sharing my flaws Matt!

Yup mine is screwie. You can almost close it by just pushing the rear corners down and giving it a little nudge. It's kinda like the hood canters back an extra inch toward the glass in the full upright position.

If I can I'll take some pictures and post them,

Michael

Hey, it's one of the few things that works (kinda) better on my car than yours. I had to flaunt it! Mine is, well, mine so it's kinda crooked when locked (but can be pushed straight easily) and one of the shocks falls off the hood every once in a while.

No offense, but are you POSITIVE you've got hood shocks on there? I think the hatch shocks interchange and they are much stronger.

its not that hard; release the shocks and slacken the bolts enough to move the hood. Your 'helper' has a hold of the front of the hood and you close it so the front is ligned and locked to the first stage.
You then push down on the back of the hood, get all lined up then caefully open again and snug down the bolts while the 'helper' holds the hood 1/4 open. It does take some feel practice, the looseness of the bolts and the patience of the 'helper' but it is not that bad.

When I was at Audi dealership (Jay Kempf's winter ride purchase), the lead salesguy
asked me if the hood opened reverse style like Jaguar E-type.

I like the misalignment. The extra gap by the windshield vents out more engine heat.
Anything to help those poor plastic bits and vacuum hoses.
PO had the car hit so I don't know what got bent where.

Ernest (NYC) Cockeyed Hood.

My hood shocks are definetely hood shocks, I can sligthly nudge the hood and it will start to fall down. It just looks so stupid with the drivers side rear corner sticking out like that......

OK, I took a look, unlike my 944's these do not look like OEM but maybe I am wrong. The 944 struts/shocks were Boge IIRC and these are Altwood. Someone can correct me if that is a stock replacement.

In the attached image the hood while closing actually comes forward about an inch which you have to push back down if you want it to align correctly. Once it is aligned then the hood drops smoothly.

Photos can really show some serious color shading issues cant they, Back to work on the paint this weekend.

Mine was a bit wonky when I first got it. I lubed it real thoroughly and it's been fine. Did the same thing with Ron's. What I used is called "Break Free", it's a teflon grease(think 140 wt gear lube) that is mixed with a lighter petroleum carrier that foams up and gets it into all the crevices, then evaporates leaving the thicker lube.
