Thats a Dodge NEON! Impressive times, but its still a Dodge Neon! I think I'd rather be seen driving around in one of my 21 yr old 928s than a brand new Neon, I dont care how fast it is. Much less when some Billy Bob runs up your rear at a stop light! I'll trust my Shark in keeping me safe on the road too. I've owned Dodges, most are not so quality built of cars compared to a Porsche. I know a guy who had a 500 hp Mit.Eclipse when I had my 911 cab. He used to tell me all the time of how he'd eat 911s for lunch. I'd tell him that I'd still take my 911 cause sitting at a red light his car wouldnt get another look whereas my 911 turned heads wherever I went!

There may be alot of cars that are fast off the line, but a 928 was designed to be an Autobaun cruiser. Once you reach triple digits is when most cars have a tough time staying with a 928. Besides, $20k would get you a pretty nice 928, 5 spd or auto.

screw quarter mile times i like trap speeds and top end. let me wind my shark from a roll and see if he could find those ponies in mid-power band. like i told my brother his mitsu makes 350hp at like 7500rpms before he winds up the turbo im in 4th about to shut down. my brother does not race me not that he cant beat me its the fact that my shark will break his T-case before the month is out. muhahahaha

Your kiddng right? SRT-4...I eat those effing things for lunch after 85 mph and have a fender's length on them from a stop. The fact that those cars are placed in the hands of idiot ricerkids makes them slow due to their lack of experience in driving.

A man comes in here bashing auto 928s in a 928 forum. Statistics prove that there are more auto 928s than stick 928s, man still bashes people defending the auto. This can only mean one thing....man is perfect reason why Porsche owners are deemed ******. If you really have a GT3 in your thread, I hope Porsche N.A. repos it from you because you are too ignorant of a person to blatantly bash a car they made that you haven't even exercised fully.

Or you are an SRT riceboy. In that case this is for you:

You are making erroneous assumptions again. I do appreciate the offer though.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with an SRT-4; I'm impressed with it.

I suspected after I illustrated just how "fast" the 928 is, there would be the following remarks:

And the following post illustrates that post-count does NOT equal post-quality:

There are too many points to make in that post, so I'll just cover a few.

Firstly, it is interesting the poster 'races' a Dodge Neon in the first place. Secondly, it is absolutely hysterical that the outcome resulted in:

Whew boy, you really showed that Neon driver what a Porsche can do, huh?

Are you sure it wasn't this Neon you 'raced'?

http://www.internetautoguide.com/car...eon/index.html

I figured since your cited examples were so close, 'by a fender', it may have been the 132 HP SAE @ 5,600 RPM model.

Again, since the 'race' was so close, the Neon must have been the 4-speed automatic, otherwise, that 5-speed manual just might have taken you for sure!

Did you consider the driver you 'raced' and had 'by a fender' may have felt sorry for you and your Porsche, and backed off so that you can save face? I've heard those Neon drivers are nice guys, unlike the Porsche guys who post garbage like this:

Your own comment <jackie chiles voice> fits you like a glove!

And here's another argument for post-quantity has nothing to do with post-quality:

In case you don't know, this is called a F-O-R-U-M. I have an O-P-I-N-I-O-N which is based upon two years of 928 S4 automatic ownership. The thread-starter asked for O-P-I-N-I-O-N-S which included views on available transmissions which I provided.

It is YOU who are 'bashing' me.

Allowing your feelings to get hurt because of misconceptions and unrealistic expectations bred from 'beating by a fender' those fire-breathing 132 HP Dodge Neon 4-speed autos, and then posting the trash you just did makes you THE poster-boy for your own words:

You are correct, everyone on this forum does have the right to their opinion. Glad to learn something about those cars. But bring us your Dodge Neon when its 17+ yrs old, if its still running.... then you can truly tout its accomplishments compared to a 928 ok?? And you may think Stig is the one doing the bashing, but honestly its your "condescending tone" in your posts that is probably more of the "burr in everyone's saddle" more than what info you actually posted. Just because you owned a "nice example" of an auto 928 for two years doesn't mean that your specific experience is the same for all 928 autos. You seem unwilling to even consider that possibility. More want to defend your positiion simply because you owned one & that was how yours was, therefore a Neon must be better than all 928S4 & prior autos.

Example: I've bought two Jeep Cherokees that I ordered from the factory. My 1988 I still own with 223k miles on the original engine & drivetrain, best vehicle I've ever had. I only use it now occasionally & to go to the home improvement stores but I hope to always keep it. I personally think its been so good because it was the last year that American Motors was in charge of production before Chrysler took over in '89. I also bought a new 1993 Jeep Cherokee. I'd say it was a "very nice example" since I bought it new. However, after a pinging started in the engine at 5k miles, they ended up replacing the engine block at 24k miles & I got rid of it at 27k miles! Even things like the sun visors & door handles came apart(original ones still on my '88)....The '93 was a total POS!! (wait... isn't Dodge under Chrysler??) Now, if I had ONLY owned that 1993, what do you think my opinion of a Jeep Cherokee would be?? Just like if I had only owned the 88, I'd not realize some had problems. But making a blanket statement either way about Cherokees based soley on either one that I've owned wouldn't be so accurate for all Cherokees other than just stating my experience. And not being willing to even entertain the possibility that maybe my experience was not a true representative for all others who owned one could perhaps very well come across a bit offensive to those who'd had a different experience with one.

Hey Sway, you can rant and rave all you want about the Neon SRT-4. It's still a Neon, and this is a 928 you are comparing it against. This is the second time you compare apples to oranges. These are 2 COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CARS IN 2 COMPLETELY DIFFERENT AREAS. Both are in a different class of their own. I don't recall the SRT-4 ever being considered a Grand Touring car. If you like the SRT-4 so much, and still have your 928, why don't you downgrade? Sell your car and get the Neon if you find it so admirable. I can't settle for anything like that since it's not in my nature.

As for me bashing you, I want to be direct as I can with you in this post. Your judgemental view of the automatic transmission is about as detailed as a line drawn on a piece of paper. Because it is only 4 gears and a torque converter, doesn't mean that it is slow. Like some have said on here, maybe you bought a bum car with no records and an inept PO. Or, it's your OPINION on it. Fine with me. But, to criticize and defame a car just because it's an automatic and compare it to cars that are built for club sport makes these posts bring out the ignorance.

Do yourself a favor and read these boards more often, do some research and see who has had what problem with their transmission. Judging by your posts so far, your ownership for 2 years has proved your lack of motivation to learn about the car. You have no actual mechanical experience with a 928, let alone technical knowledge. Maybe you will see that the Mercedes Benz manufactured automatic is about as bulletproof as they come for the 928 when not in the hands of someone who likes to destroy their cars. This tranny has survived supercharging, turbocharging, and large displacement increases of the 32-valve motor. I believe several Rennlisters have proven this. Before making ill-comments about the auto, remind yourself that you are a sheep amongst wolves here.

Oh and I'm pretty sure that was an SRT-4 I raced, because like every other young and naive SRT-4 owner that I have met, they bash the car they are losing to in another forum, while glorifying their poor quality, plastic filled interior of their NEON. And, the funny part is, I know the guy that owned the one I took on and he lives a mile away from me, and posts in the SRT forum where I caught his bashing of 928s. Lack of research promotes ignorant posts in these FORUMS where you state your O-P-I-N-I-O-N.

Ill be at Laguna Seca this weekend if anyone wants to race in their stock "whatever" car. just keep in mind, i have a stock'ish 928S4 with a set of headers and gutted with bolt on street sport suspension with wheels and tires. The base car goes for about $8k in decent shape, ready for race gutting and standard mods.

You had etter bring a C5 vet or an M3 if you want to race, or a Viper if you want to beat my 20 year old 928S4!!

You are making enormous generalizations about SRT-4 owners. You are also disrespecting a completely capable machine. If an S4 is actually faster than an SRT-4, I am very impressed and sold on the car.

I'm coming across as disrespecting it because of the originator's disrespect toward the 928. IMHO if I had the money and I was younger, I'd buy an SRT-4. It's a pocket rocket! Especially now that I see them everyday at over 65% of used car lots in Southbay. It makes me wonder how the PO treated the car though. There are numerous owners of various car makes that all have different personalities; some are ******, some are the nice type. I don't want to come off as a *****, but someone who disrespects my choice of drivetrain for a 928 should be treated the same way. However, I refuse to waste my time with such a shrewd opinion such as his, nor do I wish to make enemies on this forum.

Knock it off you guys.

I have to agree with Sway - at least a little bit. I've driven automatic 928's, no thanks. Wait and buy the car you really want. I'm thinking about picking up an auto S4 - only because I already own two 5-speed 928's.

I've driven M3's and I would never compare them directly with 928's of any year. IMO they are closer to a 951 for a direct comparison.

By the way - questioning Sway's experience and knowledge of 928's is like walking up to Mario Andretti, telling him he doesn't know how to drive. There is a reason many people with decades of ownership / experience with these cars never post anything. The personal assumptions and attacks of my pal Sway here sum it up pretty good.

Point taken Hacker, but he could have said something to that effect instead of copping the arrogant/condescending attitude with those of us disputing his opinion. Granted, I did not start things off well with my initial comment but a lot of grief could have been avoided here had he let us know a little more about himself. For my part, sorry about any hard feelings and my offer to let you drive mine if you are ever in the area was genuine. You might even like it.

Hacker-Pschorr,

Having owned a '96 M3 for 8 years and an '80 928 S for 17 years, I do think there are many similarities. I also owned an '88 944TS for 4 years (and put 100k miles on it), and really don't find many similarities.

I suspect, like you, I was disappointed with many peoples negative comments about other cars. At my core, I am a car guy, and believe to each his own. I don't have anything negative to say about 911s, vettes or Neons. I have what I have, and like what I have

Bill,
I'll give Sway a good smack up-side-the-head next time I see him.

Stan,
My M3 comment was not a knock on the M3, but to me the 951 / M3 are tossable, nimble sports cars. The 928 more of a GT car along the line of a 6-series BMW. BMW's as a whole are unique cars, just like 928's so they are difficult to "place" in a partiular catagory.

I've alwasy wanted to add an 850i to my stable, seams like a good compliment to the 928.

I to find myself "lost" sometimes around here. I am a car guy first, 928 guy second. Too many people buy their first sports car, convinced it is the best car ever, hands down, nothing compares. I love these cars, but lets be honest. If I had $300k to lay down on a car, there would be an Aston in my garage.
