If you drop the crossmember with the transmission, you'll still have to disconnect the brake calipers. The only connection between the tranmission and the crossmember, is the two rubber mounts.
And recoupling the transmssion back to the TT without brut force requires near perfect alignment. So it would be more difficult to accomplish with the crossmember dangling from it. Then after you have them together, you still need to connect the suspension links to the body, which would likely be more difficult than if it was just the crossmember alone.

OK, thanks for all the advice. Should be a fun Saturday! It appears some people have done this before with the tranny in-place, judging from all the cut bellhousings Jim reports.

Bill, I sure hope you are taking good notes on saturday...I am gonna need them bad when finals are over and I try to tackle this bymyself in the back yard. Best of luck and keep us posted.
